\nOXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi’s William
\nWinter Institute for Racial Reconciliation is scheduled to
\nco-host the regional Alliance for Truth and Racial
\nReconciliation’s Planning Conference Nov. 9-11.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nDuring the conference, 14 representatives from various
\norganizations throughout the region are to present case
\nstudies discussing specific responses to racial violence
\nwithin their communities. A panel of conferees are to hear
\nthe cases and give feedback discussing the best strategies
\nto proceed.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe public is welcome to attend the panel session Saturday
\n(Nov. 10) at 1:30 p.m. in Peabody Hall. Panelists include
\nformer Gov. William Winter and Rita Bender, widow of one of
\nthe three civil rights workers killed in Neshoba County in
\n1964.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing the panel presentation, conferees are to meet in
\nsmall groups to discuss various topics of reform. For
\nexample, one group’s discussion will focus on Atlanta and
\nwork that can be done to improve Georgia as whole, while
\nothers will discuss lobbying actions and possible revisions
\nto public policies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Forming a coalition of several different groups will give
\nus leverage to advance common policies concerning race
\nrelations,” said Susan Glisson, executive director of the
\nWinter Institute. “By having a wide range of opinions, we
\nshould be able to compare and contrast strategies from
\nvarious communities. Each place has its own challenges and
\nstrategies on how to handle them.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe alliance was formed at a 2006 conference at UM, which
\nbrought together groups from across the American South
\ndevoted to racial justice and reconciliation. The
\nconference grows out of continuing work around the region,
\nwhich includes curriculum development, exhibits, memorials,
\ntruth commissions, prosecutions and community
\norganization. The grass-roots alliance pledged at its
\nconvening conference to “commit ourselves to the creation
\nof a more perfect union in which justice, dignity and
\nrespect for all our fellow human beings is secured.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe coalition’s aim is to establish a new meaning for the
\nConfederacy and create a New South that will lead the
\nnation away from racism, violence and poverty, and toward
\ntruth, equality and peace, Glisson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
