\n\"center-for-study-of.jpg\"OXFORD, Miss. – The Center for the Study of Southern
\nCulture at the University of Mississippi marks 30 years of
\nwork with a series of events Nov. 8-11.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nAlumni, students, faculty, staff and friends are invited to
\ncome together to celebrate the center’s achievements,
\nreflect on its past, consider the present and plan for the
\nfuture. All events are free and open to the public.
\nHowever, reservations are required for several social
\nfunctions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are encouraging people who’ve had various types of
\nconnections with the center to meet each other,” said Ted
\nOwnby, CSSC interim director and professor of history and
\nSouthern studies. “We have a lot of successful alumni now
\nand we want current students to meet alumni who do
\ninteresting things.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCynthia Tucker, editorial page editor for the Atlanta
\nJournal-Constitution, is slated to open the discussion
\nThursday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m. in Overby Center Auditorium.
\nShe plans to talk about the development of the South over
\nthe last three decades.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTaking a look ahead is Julia Reed, Vogue magazine editor
\nand author of “Queen of the Turtle Derby and Other Southern
\nPhenomena” (Random House paperback, 2005). She speaks
\nFriday, Nov. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Tupelo Room of Barnard
\nObservatory. Ownby said Tucker and Reed were chosen
\nbecause they have no direct ties to the center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Cynthia Tucker’s columns help set the agenda for thinking
\nof Southern policy and politics, and she hasn’t been here
\nbefore,” Ownby said. “Julia Reed is a Mississippian who
\nwrites with a sense of humor and warmth, despite her
\nsarcasm, and I think a lot of people find that intriguing.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe meeting will gather attendees for such social events as
\na Saturday “dinner on the grounds,” followed by a Southern
\nstudies prom that evening and a Sunday morning golfing
\nfinale. Reservations are required for these events by
\ncalling 662-915-5993.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOwnby said Charles Reagan Wilson is to be honored during
\nthe weekend for his service as the center’s director for
\neight years. Wilson chose to return to the classroom
\nearlier this year, becoming professor and Kelly Gene Cook
\nSr. Chair in History and professor of Southern studies.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCSSC continues to build on its history in helping to chart
\nways into the South’s future. Events at the center began in
\nNovember 1977 with a symposium on the work of Eudora Welty,
\nwith Welty herself in attendance. Along with its
\nundergraduate and graduate programs, the center supports
\nand houses diverse projects, including Living Blues
\nmagazine, the Southern Foodways Alliance, the Oxford
\nConference for the Book, documentary studies and the Future
\nof the South initiative.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMuch of the anniversary meeting is to focus on the alumni
\nof the Southern studies academic program. The undergraduate
\nprogram began just after the center was founded, and its
\nmaster’s program was approved in1986. Graduates of the
\nprogram have gone on to earn doctorates in various fields.
\nA panel presentation during the upcoming celebration
\nfeatures several alumni, who plan to discuss how their
\nSouthern studies education has helped them in their
\ncareers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJon Peede, director of literature for grants at the
\nNational Endowment for the Arts in Washington, D.C.,
\ncompleted his master’s in Southern studies at UM in 1993.
\n“The Southern Studies program provided a remarkable
\nexposure to multiple disciplines while still insisting on a
\nstrong foundation in one or more graduate fields,” Peede
\nsaid. “I credit much of my professional career – as a book
\neditor, college communications director and now NEA
\nliterature director – to the mentors I studied under in
\nSouthern studies.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAmanda Wallis of Pontotoc completed her bachelor’s degree
\nin Southern studies in December 2004. A third-year law
\nstudent at UM, Wallis reflects on how her undergraduate
\nexperience helped prepare her for law school. “The program
\nhelped me to develop my writing and analytical skills,
\nwhich provided me with a strong foundation to work from
\nonce I began law school,” Wallis said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This anniversary raises the question of whether or not 30
\nis middle-aged or if at 30 we need new ideas of what to do
\nand where to go,” Ownby said. “Thirty is pretty successful
\nas far as centers go, and ours is continuing to look for
\nnew things to do. We hope to have our friends together to
\nhelp us think of what we should do now.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
