OXFORD, Miss. — The University of Mississippi was ranked the second safest campus in the Southeastern Conference\u00a0on Universityprimetime.com’s review of the safest schools in America.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Nationally, UM ranked 17th.<\/p>\n

The safety of the campus ranking can be partially attributed to the work of UM Police Chief Calvin Sellers and the University Police Department. Sellers and his team measure their success by crimes prevented and not by number of arrest, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur total emphasis is for our campus to be a safe place for people to live, study and interact,\u201d Sellers said. \u201cOur attitude is, if we solved the crime then we failed in preventing the crime to occur.\u201d<\/p>\n

UM’s public safety officials are working to\u00a0keep Ole Miss safe and place a heavy emphasis on teaching students tips for being safe.<\/p>\n
