OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi is home to a
\nnumber of bands that offer audiences a wide range of
\ninstrumental music. However, one UM band performs not only
\nfor those who can hear, but also for the hearing impaired.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nInstead of playing drums or trumpets, members of the Ole
\nMiss Hand Band uniquely express music with their hands by
\nsigning lyrics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The overall goal is to show people the beauty of sign
\nlanguage,” said Rebecca Lowe, faculty adviser of the hand
\nband since January 2002.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe group has performed in churches across northeast
\nMississippi, at Ole Miss football games and, for the last
\nthree years, at graduation ceremonies for the School of
\nApplied Sciences. One of the band’s major accomplishments
\nwas its performance for 13,000 attendees at the American
\nSpeech, Language and Hearing Association National
\nConvention, Lowe said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nVanessa Brasher, a third-year psychology major from Banner,
\nserves as the group’s manager. She joined the band after
\nhearing about it from Lowe, who was her work-study
\nsupervisor during her freshman year.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Signing is like dancing with your hands,” Brasher said. “I
\nlike to have another means of expressing the song other
\nthan singing.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOriginally founded within the Department of Communication
\nSciences and Disorders, the band is composed of around 20
\nstudents from a range of majors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHeather Sneed, a senior communication sciences and
\ndisorders major from Chattanooga, Tenn., has been a member
\nsince her sophomore year. Besides improving her signing,
\nSneed said the experience has allowed her to meet new
\nfriends.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A special bond is created between all the girls, and it’s
\nreally fun to work together,” she said. “I also really
\nenjoy the performance aspect of it.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile Sneed’s favorite performances are signing pregame
\nsongs at Ole Miss football games, she also enjoys
\nperforming in church services because of signing’s unique
\nway of demonstrating lyrics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I think it’s great that you can express the gospel through
\nsigning, which is a less common avenue,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhether at football games or in churches, the group’s
\nperformances have been helped increase people’s awareness
\nof sign language as a whole, Brasher said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We have many deaf people who struggle through life because
\nfew people know how to sign,” she said. Learning to sign
\ncan be a great opportunity for ministry and assistance,
\nespecially in hospital settings involving hearing-impaired
\npatients, she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
