\nOXFORD, Miss. – A taste of authentic Chinese cuisine is
\noffered at the University of Mississippi Thursday (Nov. 8)
\nwhen the new Cook! Eat! Share! organization hosts its first
\ncivic dinner.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nScheduled at 6 p.m. in Lenoir Hall, China Table features a
\nthree-course meal of vermicelli and seaweed, Chinese
\nbarbecue ribs, Chinese dumplings and green bean soup. The
\ncost is $8.88, selected because of a traditional Chinese
\nbelief: In the Chinese language, the number “8” when spoken
\nis similar to the sound of the word “fortune” and is
\nconsidered a lucky number in Chinese culture, said Daphne
\nIngene, a graduate student in counseling education and
\ncoordinator of the dinner.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIngene, a native of Hong Kong, is a member of Cook! Eat!
\nShare!, which was created this fall by UM’s Counseling
\nCenter, International Programs Office and Department of
\nFamily and Consumer Sciences. The multicultural
\norganization includes students and faculty spouses
\nrepresenting the countries of Western Europe, Asia and
\nSouth America, as well as the United States.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIngene said she wants to introduce the local community to
\nother international cultures by means of food. Her vision
\nhas become the organization’s goal. The group plans to
\noffer a series of civic dinners, each one spotlighting a
\ndifferent ethnic food prepared by its members.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As an international student, I wanted to find a way to
\nfeed the American curiosity about foreign culture,” she
\nsaid. “While working with international students, I learned
\nfood is our international language.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nYang Liu of China, a pharmacology postdoctoral research
\nassociate and member of Cook! Eat! Share!, is supervising
\nthe meal preparations in cooperation with other members of
\nChinese origin. Dinner guests will learn not only about
\nChinese cuisine, but also about traditions and values of
\nthe country.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
