OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 To help satisfy the growing demand for on-campus student housing, the University of Mississippi plans to build two new five-story residence halls that will house up to 624 students on the site occupied by Guess Hall.<\/p>\n

The $40 million project, New Student Housing Phase 2, began Sept. 8, when a contractor began removing trees and pavement from the Guess Hall parking lot. Demolition of the building is next and is to be completed by January 2015.<\/p>\n

Ninety percent of the materials removed from Guess Hall will be recycled, said Thomas Hickman, co-owner of Southern Recycling and Demolition Inc. “We will be reusing all scrap metal and try to send all the tree debris\u00a0to a wood recycler.”<\/p>\n

The project is scheduled to be completed\u00a0and open for new residents in August 2016.<\/p>\n

“We are excited to begin demolition work as this marks the start of construction and delivery of another high-quality student housing facility that residents for many years will enjoy,” said Lionel Maten, assistant vice chancellor for enrollment management and housing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
