\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi civil engineering
\nfaculty encourage the public to attend a workshop on
\nearthquake preparedness Nov. 13 at the Oxford Conference
\nCenter, 102 Ed Perry Blvd.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe “Mississippi Workshop of Catastrophic Earthquake
\nResponse Planning: New Madrid Seismic Zone” convenes at
\n8:45 a.m. There is a $25 registration fee, which includes
\nlunch.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe workshop is open to the general public but is
\nespecially recommended for private companies with large
\noperations (i.e.: medical facilities and manufacturing
\nplants), school district safety officers, city\/county
\nplanners\/administrators, building officials, emergency
\nresponse personnel and business continuity\/risk managers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nProfessional engineers will receive three professional
\ndevelopment hours for attending the morning session and one
\nPDH credit for attending the afternoon session.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHosted by the Center for Community Earthquake Preparedness
\nat UM, the workshop is sponsored by the FEMA Department of
\nHomeland Security, University of Illinois, U.S. Army Corps
\nof Engineers Construction Engineering Research Laboratory
\nand UM’s School of Engineering.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Mid-America Earthquake Center at the University of
\nIllinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Institute for Crisis
\nDisaster and Risk Management at George Washington
\nUniversity have teamed to conduct this project,” said Chris
\nMullen, UM civil engineering professor and CCEP director.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMullen said the objective is to assess the vulnerability of
\nlocal and regional areas in the central and eastern United
\nStates to New Madrid Seismic Zone earthquakes. States in
\nthe NMSZ include Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky,
\nTennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA comprehensive assessment methodology, which utilizes
\ngeospatial information data to predict hazard, inventory,
\nand fragility, has been implemented to provide detailed
\nestimates of losses in the study’s eight-state region.
\nDamages in the event of an earthquake could include
\nbuildings, bridges, roads and railways, utility networks,
\nairport locations, water and sewer treatment plants, and
\nnatural gas and power generation facilities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is the most comprehensive study to date and one of
\nonly several such national scale studies sponsored by
\nFEMA,” Mullen said. “Agencies and individuals that may not
\nnecessarily understand earthquakes but have special
\nknowledge of or work with databases in the state on
\ncritical infrastructure are also invited to listen to what
\nthe study has assumed and comment on its accuracy or
\ncompleteness.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPresenters from FEMA, the Mid-America Earthquake Center,
\nthe U.S. Geological Survey and Central U.S. Earthquake
\nConsortium are slated to share their findings at the
\nworkshop, Mullen said. A panel discussion and open forum
\nfollow the presentations to encourage feedback on the
\npotential impact of the findings on public and private
\nentities located or operating in Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe deadline to pre-register for the workshop is Nov. 9,
\nsaid Dorothy Lloyd, senior secretary for the civil
\nengineering department.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The earlier participants register, the better we can plan
\nthe number of lunches and handouts,” she said. “Walk-in
\nregistration is not a problem, however.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
