{"id":39426,"date":"2014-09-16T08:30:36","date_gmt":"2014-09-16T13:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.olemiss.edu\/?p=39426"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:25:15","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:25:15","slug":"new-york-times-mississippi-death-row-case-faults-bite-mark-forensics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/new-york-times-mississippi-death-row-case-faults-bite-mark-forensics\/","title":{"rendered":"New York Times: Mississippi Death Row Case Faults Bite-Mark Forensics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"271\" data-total-count=\"271\">In one of the country\u2019s first nationally televised criminal trials, of the smirking serial murderer Ted Bundy in Florida in 1979, jurors and viewers alike were transfixed as dental experts showed how Mr. Bundy\u2019s crooked teeth resembled a bite on a 20-year-old victim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"115\" data-total-count=\"386\">Mr. Bundy was found guilty and the obscure field of \u201cforensic dentistry\u201d won a place in the public imagination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"189\" data-total-count=\"575\">Since then, expert testimony matching body wounds with the dentition of the accused has played a role in hundreds of murder and rape cases, sometimes helping to put defendants on death row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"140\" data-total-count=\"715\">But over this same period, mounting evidence has shown that matching body wounds to a suspect\u2019s dentition is prone to bias and unreliable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"140\" data-total-count=\"715\">A disputed bite-mark identification is at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.innocenceproject.org\/docs\/Howard_FINAL_MSSC_PCR_91514.pdf\">the center of an appeal<\/a>\u00a0that was filed Monday with the Mississippi Supreme Court.
