\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi faculty, staff
\nand students and other members of the Oxford community are
\ninvited to participate in the annual Adopt-a-Basket program
\nto provide Thanksgiving dinners for needy families in the
\nOxford area.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nDonations of specific nonperishable food items, as well as
\ngift cards, are needed for 400 baskets to be delivered
\nNov. 14.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Lena Wiley at Interfaith Compassion Ministries told us
\nthey could use as many baskets as we can collect, so we
\nhave increased our goal to 400 for this year,” said Valeria
\nRoss, assistant dean of students for multicultural affairs
\nand volunteer services. “I think it is a good project for
\ncampus organizations to work on together.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInterfaith Compassion Ministries of Oxford and UM personnel
\nidentify families who are in need of assistance for
\nAdopt-a-Basket, which is sponsored by the Office of the
\nDean of Students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n Volunteers are also needed on the delivery date to help
\nwith collecting and loading the baskets in the Student
\nUnion Ballroom, Ross said. “Since we have increased the
\nnumber of baskets each year, we really need people to help
\nus with the collection of the baskets as they are delivered
\nthat Wednesday and help us load the baskets. The Phi Delta
\nTheta fraternity has agreed to undertake the task of
\ndelivering all of the baskets.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Physical Plant Department is donating all the boxes
\nneeded for deliveries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo fill a basket, groups or individuals should provide the
\ncomplete list of specified nonperishable food items along
\nwith a $30 gift card from Wal-Mart or Kroger. The card
\nallows families to purchase perishables, such as turkey,
\nmilk, eggs, butter and pie crusts, to complete their
\nThanksgiving meal.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing is a list of nonperishable items needed for each
\nbasket:
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

  • 2 large cans of corn<\/li>\n
  • 2 large cans of green
    \nbeans<\/li>\n
  • 2 cans of chicken broth<\/li>\n
  • 1 can of
    \ncranberry sauce<\/li>\n
  • 1 bag of rolls<\/li>\n
  • 3 pounds
    \nsweet potatoes<\/li>\n
  • 3 pounds white potatoes<\/li>\n
  • 1
    \ncan of sweetened condensed milk<\/li>\n
  • 5 pounds
    \nsugar<\/li>\n
  • 5 pounds corn meal<\/li>\n
  • 1 large
    \nonion<\/li>\n
  • 1 bunch of celery<\/li>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    \nCoordinators ask that volunteers gather all the items on
    \nthe list, which have a total estimated value of less than
    \n$60, and refrain from buying items not on the list. The
    \nitems, intended to feed from four to six people, should
    \nthen be placed in a box or other container, not necessarily
    \na basket, and dropped off at the Student Union Ballroom
    \nbetween 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 13 or 8-11:30 a.m. Nov. 14.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

    \nThe Adopt-a-Basket initiative began more than three years
    \nago as part of the Mississippi Universities Service Into
    \nCaring project involving the state’s eight public
    \ninstitutions of higher learning.
    \n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
