Georgia O’Keeffe’s ‘Lake George’ abstraction is part of the University Museum’s permanent collection.<\/p><\/div>\n

The University of Mississippi Museum has more than 20,000 objects in its collection, and in honor of the museum’s 75th anniversary this year, the Ole Miss News Blog is featuring 75 different items from its collections.<\/p>\n

Today, we feature the museum’s Georgia O’Keeffe abstraction of Lake George.<\/p>\n

The piece, which was created in 1918, is an oil painting on a board and was given to the museum by\u00a0<\/span>Semour Lawrence<\/a><\/span>. Lawrence was\u00a0a publisher who introduced the country to many great new writers during his career, including\u00a0Katherine Anne Porter, Kurt Vonnegut, Richard Brautigan, Richard Ford, Barry Hannah, Jim Harrison and Joseph Heller.<\/p>\n

When Oxford resident writer Barry Hannah brought Lawrence to Oxford, he fell in love with the town and purchased a home near Rowan Oak. When Lawrence died in 1994, his collection of American art came to the museum. It includes the O’Keeffe painting, plus paintings by Marsden Hartley, Man Ray, Arthur Dove and many other important artists.<\/p>\n

The museum’s description of the piece contains a nice biography of O’Keefe.<\/p>\n

Raised\u2005on\u2005a\u2005Wisconsin\u2005farm,\u2005Georgia\u2005O’Keeffe\u2005showed\u2005early\u2005promise\u2005in\u2005painting.\u2005Her\u2005formal\u2005training\u2005in\u2005imitative\u2005realism\u2005at\u2005the\u2005Art\u2005Institute\u2005of\u2005Chicago\u2005and\u2005the\u2005Art\u2005Students\u2005League\u2005of\u2005New\u2005York\u2005proved\u2005unfulfilling,\u2005and\u2005became\u2005the\u2005catalyst\u2005for\u2005the\u2005development\u2005of\u2005her\u2005own\u2005style.\u2005Early\u2005charcoal\u2005drawings\u2005sent\u2005to\u2005a\u2005friend\u2005from\u2005Columbia\u2005University\u2005in\u20051916\u2005were\u2005passed\u2005on\u2005to\u2005Alfred\u2005Stieglitz,\u2005photographer\u2005and\u2005owner\u2005of\u2005avant-garde\u2005291\u2005Gallery\u2005in\u2005New\u2005York.\u2005Stieglitz\u2005began\u2005corresponding\u2005with\u2005O’Keeffe\u2005and\u2005exhibited\u2005her\u2005work,\u2005later\u2005offering\u2005her\u2005financial\u2005support\u2005for\u2005a\u2005career\u2005in\u2005New\u2005York.\u2005After\u2005arriving\u2005in\u2005New\u2005York,\u2005she\u2005and\u2005Stieglitz\u2005fell\u2005in\u2005love\u2005and\u2005were\u2005married\u2005in\u20051924.\u2005After\u2005Stieglitz’s\u2005death\u2005in\u20051946,\u2005O’Keeffe\u2005moved\u2005to\u2005New\u2005Mexico\u2005and\u2005created\u2005another\u2005half-century\u2005of\u2005work.\u2005Perhaps,\u2005most\u2005notably,\u2005her\u2005closely\u2005focused,\u2005large-scale\u2005images\u2005of\u2005flowers.\u2005She\u2005secured\u2005wide\u2005acclaim\u2005and\u2005recognition\u2005for\u2005her\u2005work\u2005in\u2005her\u2005lifetime,\u2005and\u2005died\u2005at\u2005the\u2005age\u2005of\u200598.<\/em><\/p>\n

As part of the museum’s anniversary celebration, admission is free through Aug. 8, 2015. There will be a lot to see as the museum introduces several new exhibits and unveils\u00a0<\/span>a new major gift<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as well as the reinstallation of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>David M. Robinson Collection of Greek and Roman antiquities in the Mary Buie building.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

The first of the 75 items to be featured\u00a0<\/span>was the Volute Krater<\/a>, an ancient Greek artifact.<\/p>\n

The University Museum is open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The museum is\u00a0closed Mondays and regular university holidays. Its facilities are handicapped-accessible.
