\nOXFORD, Miss. — A program at the University of
\nMississippi’s Overby Center for Southern Journalism and
\nPolitics Monday (Nov. 12) highlights the opening of an
\nexhibition of more than 50 pieces of work by the late
\nPulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Doug Marlette.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe exhibition is to be unveiled at a reception following
\nthe 5:30 p.m. program in the Overby Center Auditorium.
\nMarlette’s widow, Melinda Marlette, is expected to attend.
\nBoth events are open to the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe program, a remembrance of Marlette and his work, opens
\nwith remarks by Ed Williams, editorial page editor of The
\nCharlotte Observer, where he and Marlette worked together
\nand became close friends. Williams is a former editor of
\nthe Ole Miss student newspaper, The Daily Mississippian.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOxford High School students are slated to perform several
\nnumbers from their production of “Kudzu,” a musical comedy
\nthe artist had spun from his cartoon strip. Marlette, who
\nwas 57, was killed in an automobile accident last July
\nwhile on his way to help the students with their
\nproduction. The group performed the play at an
\ninternational event in Scotland in late summer. Despite
\nMarlette’s death, the show went on with the blessings of
\nhis family.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Overby Center retrospective, on display until January,
\ncomprises more than 50 pieces of work and covers Marlette’s
\n35-year career, from his early drawings for The Charlotte
\nObserver to his last cartoons this year for the Tulsa
\nWorld. By the time of his death, Marlette had seen his work
\nsyndicated in newspapers across the country, and “Kudzu,”
\nthe cartoon strip he created, published in hundreds of
\nnewspapers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMarlette spent part of his childhood in Laurel, as well as
\nin North Carolina and Florida. His son Jackson attended Ole
\nMiss during his freshman year before starting art school in
\nFrance.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Marlette’s cartoons won attention from the outset of his
\ncareer in 1972,” said Curtis Wilkie, holder of the Kelly G.
\nCook Chair of Journalism at UM. “His work was provocative
\nand sharply drawn, and he used the medium to lance
\npoliticians, televangelists and celebrities over the years.
\nHe was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also wrote
\ntwo novels and contributed columns to several magazines.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The breadth of his talents was breathtaking,” said
\nMarlette’s friend Pat Conroy, the novelist. “He made the
\nworld funnier.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMany of Marlette’s most famous cartoons will be included in
\nthe exhibit at the Overby Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We’re grateful to Melinda Marlette for not only lending us
\nDoug’s work, but for helping us select the cartoons,” said
\nCharles Overby, chairman of the Overby Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt is the first exhibit at the center, which opened this
\nfall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
