OXFORD, Miss. – To help mark 30 years of examining,
\nreflecting upon and celebrating Southern culture, Michelle
\nHyver Oakes has pledged $30,000 to the Center for the Study
\nof Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.
\nOakes, who recently became chair of the center’s advisory
\ncommittee, said she feels strong ties to both the center
\nand Ole Miss.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“The center’s work over the past 30 years has been
\nremarkable,” she said. “I’m honored to chair its advisory
\ncommittee and help champion its mission and activities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nShe also hopes her gift will inspire others to give.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“It’s important to financially support the organizations we
\nbelieve in, and I believe in the center,” Oakes said. “I
\nhope my commitment will be the first of many new gifts to
\nthe center made by its friends and supporters. Our
\ncollective donations will enable its continued vitality and
\ngrowth.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. MomentUM, which
\nends in December 2008, already has raised more than $160
\nmillion for scholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty
\nsupport, a basketball practice facility, residential
\ncolleges and a new law school on the Oxford campus. Also in
\nthe plan is a cancer center at the UM Medical Center in
\nJackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nOakes’ gift is designated as unrestricted, which allows
\nCSSC interim director Ted Ownby and others who best
\nunderstand the center’s needs to decide how and when the
\nmoney is to be used.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Friends of the center nurture and sustain it,” Ownby said.
\n“We are so grateful to Michelle Hyver Oakes for this
\ngenerous gift. She has put her support in us and entrusted
\nus with continuing to educate others about Southern
\nculture. Gifts like this help us fund important projects
\nsuch as The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and other
\noutreach programs, including conferences and publications.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“With these funds, we also aim to improve financial support
\nfor graduate students and create of a research fund for
\ncenter faculty. I’m awed by this gift, and I appreciate the
\nsymmetry of the amount to honor the center’s 30th
\nanniversary.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nPrivate gifts have also helped fund scholarships and
\ndocumentary photography exhibitions, establish the Southern
\nMedia Archive and host weekly Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture
\nSeries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nA native of New Orleans, Oakes earned a bachelor’s degree
\nin biology from UM and her MBA from Tulane University. She
\nand her husband, Michael Oakes, reside in Charleston, S.C.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe center celebrates its 30th anniversary this week with
\nlectures by Cynthia Tucker, Pulitzer Prize-winning
\neditorial page editor for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
\nand Julia Reed, Vogue magazine editor and author of “Queen
\nof the Turtle Derby and Other Southern Phenomena,” and
\nother events.
