\nOXFORD, Miss. — A University of South Dakota law professor
\nwith expertise in Indian Law is slated to deliver a lecture
\nNov. 15 on the subject at the University of Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nFrank Pommersheim’s address “Broken Landscape: Indian
\nTribes and the Constitution” is set for 4 p.m. in the
\nWilliam N. Ethridge Jr. Moot Court Room of the Lamar Law
\nCenter. The presentation and reception to follow are open
\nto the public.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am greatly looking forward to my visit to the University
\nof Mississippi School of Law and the opportunity to meet
\nstudents, faculty and members of the community,”
\nPommersheim said. “A key and unresolved question within the
\nfield of Indian law, whether in Mississippi or elsewhere,
\nis the relationship of Indian tribes within our national
\nconstitutional structure. This is the topic that will be
\nthe focus of my presentation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBefore he began teaching at South Dakota in 1984,
\nPommersheim lived and worked on the Rosebud Sioux
\nReservation for 10 years. He serves on a number of tribal
\nappellate courts throughout Indian country. He is the
\nassociate justice for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw
\nSupreme Court and was recently selected chief justice of
\nthe Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Court of Appeals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLaw Dean Samuel M. Davis said the law school is delighted
\nto have someone of Pommersheim’s standing lecturing at the
\nlaw school. “With the significant presence of the
\nMississippi Band of Choctaw Indians in the state, his topic
\nis of great interest to all of us,” Davis said. “I look
\nforward to meeting him and listening to his lecture.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOriginally from New York, Pommersheim received his juris
\ndoctorate from Columbia University and his master’s of
\npublic administration from Harvard University. His
\nrecognition includes the University of South Dakota
\nBelbas-Larson Award for Excellence in Teaching and the
\nDistinguished Lecturer for the Northern Plains Indian Law
\nCenter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPommersheim has shared his extensive knowledge of Indian
\nLaw through his books, numerous articles and contribution
\nto the 2005 edition of Felix Cohen’s Handbook of Federal
\nIndian Law. He is the author of “Braid of Feathers:
\nAmerican Indian Law & Contemporary Tribal Life” (University
\nof California Press, 1997) and is working on a book titled
\n“Broken Landscape: Indians, Indian Tribes and the
\nConstitution.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
