OXFORD, Miss. — University of Mississippi Chancellor
\nRobert Khayat and Holmes Community College President Glenn
\nBoyce met in Grenada today and signed an agreement bringing
\nhigher education to more Mississippians through a joint
\nventure.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nBeginning in January, when students enroll for the spring
\n2008 semester at the Holmes-Grenada Center campus, the
\nventure will enable area students to enroll in
\ngraduate-level courses in education. Eventually, juniorand
\nsenior-level courses are to be added.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe target audience is professional educators in Grenada
\nand surrounding counties who wish to complete master’s
\ndegrees in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in
\nelementary education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are committed to meeting the higher education needs of
\nour state \u00ad not only on the Ole Miss campus but by reaching
\nout to local communities,” said UM Chancellor Robert
\nKhayat. “We are grateful to President Glenn Boyce and his
\nstaff for the collaborative initiative.” The program should
\nquickly help to put more qualified teachers and
\nadministrators in area schools, Boyce said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“This partnership is a tremendous example of how
\ncollaborative efforts between the community college system
\nand the institutions of higher learning can bring greater
\naccess and opportunity to Mississippi’s residents,” he
\nsaid. “We are very excited about what this will mean for
\nstudents in the northern part of our district, and we hope
\nto have a significant impact on nontraditional students who
\nare looking for opportunity and access to either finish a
\nfour-year degree or change careers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe new program, coordinated by the UM Division of Outreach
\nand Continuing Education, is similar to offerings at the
\nuniversity’s other regional campuses, said Tim Angle, UM
\nassistant provost and director of the outreach division.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The regional campus locations in Booneville, Southaven and
\nTupelo have given people in those areas a chance to
\ncomplete their college degrees in a way that is flexible
\nfor working adults,” Angle said. “We anticipate that the
\nUM-Grenada site will do the same for people in the north
\ncentral part of the state.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nStudents enrolling in the program attend two graduate-level
\nclasses per week in the evenings at the Holmes-Grenada
\nCenter. By following a specific course rotation that
\nincludes summer sessions, participants can complete their
\ndegrees in December 2008.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Division of Outreach is working with the UM School of
\nEducation to offer courses that will allow educators to
\nbecome school administrators through the master’s of
\neducational leadership program. Plans are being made to
\nadmit a cohort group into this program in summer 2008.
\nJunior-level course work for Holmes-Grenada students who
\nwant to complete a bachelor’s degree in education may begin
\nas soon as the 2008 fall semester.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nClasses at the UM-Grenada site are to be taught by School
\nof Education faculty, using a combination of live lectures,
\ndistance education via satellite and online courses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“The bachelor’s degree program is a perfect fit for those
\nHolmes Community College graduates who want to complete
\ntheir junior- and senior-level courses, but may not be able
\nto drive the long distance or relocate to Oxford,” Angle
\nsaid. “We tailor these courses for nontraditional college
\nstudents so that they can work, care for their families and
\nremain active in their communities while working toward
\ncompleting their college degrees.”
