UM photo by Kevin Bain.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8212; Four women from the University of<br \/>\nMississippi are included in this year&#8217;s class of a<br \/>\nstatewide honor coordinated by the city of Madison Chamber<br \/>\nof Commerce.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Recently recognized as 2008 Dynamic Women of Mississippi<br \/>\nfrom UM were faculty members Nancy Bercaw and Kirsten<br \/>\nDellinger and staff members Mary Harrington and Traci<br \/>\nMitchell.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>In its second year, the recognition program seeks to<br \/>\nannually spotlight women statewide for enhancing the<br \/>\nstate&#8217;s national and international prominence. They are<br \/>\nchosen from the fields of business, government, the arts,<br \/>\neducation, health care and community service.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The 25 honorees this year are featured in a desk calendar<br \/>\nproduced by the chamber. The calendar has the late Pat<br \/>\nFordice, former first lady, on its cover.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Ole Miss honorees were nominated by UM&#8217;s Office of the<br \/>\nChancellor, Office of the Vice Chancellor for University<br \/>\nRelations and Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender<br \/>\nStudies. All four women served on a subcommittee of the<br \/>\nChancellor&#8217;s Commission on the Status of Women that<br \/>\nauthored the UM Pay Equity and Advancement Report 2007. The<br \/>\nnomination included the statement: &#8220;They have demonstrated<br \/>\nsuperb university service in this endeavor as well as in<br \/>\nother efforts on our campus.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Following are recent highlights of the honorees&#8217; careers:<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t<span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<li> Nancy Bercaw, associate professor of history and Southern<br \/>\n\tstudies, chairs the Chancellor&#8217;s Commission on the Status<br \/>\n\tof Women. As a member of the commission, she revised the<br \/>\n\tuniversity&#8217;s Stop-the-Clock policy and is drafting a<br \/>\n\tParental Leave Policy for faculty and staff. She has<br \/>\n\tcontributed time and service to progressive initiatives,<br \/>\n\tincluding the William Winter Institute for Racial<br \/>\n\tReconciliation and ALLIES, the safe-space program for gay,<br \/>\n\tlesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Her research<br \/>\n\treflects her interest in social rights. Her first book,<br \/>\n\tpublished in 2003, is titled &#8220;Gendered Freedoms: Race,<br \/>\n\tRights, and the Politics of the Household in the<br \/>\n\tMississippi Delta, 1861-1875&#8221; (University Press of<br \/>\n\tFlorida).\n\t<\/li>\n<li> Kirsten Dellinger, chair and associate professor of<br \/>\n\tsociology and anthropology, is the first woman to chair a<br \/>\n\tsocial sciences department at UM. She is active in campus<br \/>\n\tand national organizations that promote gender equality.<br \/>\n\tShe serves on the Chancellor&#8217;s Commission and on the<br \/>\n\tadvisory committee of the Sarah Isom Center for Women and<br \/>\n\tGender Studies. Nationally, she is a member of the<br \/>\n\teditorial boards of the journals Gender &#038; Society and<br \/>\n\tSocial Problems, as well as the Council of the Sex and<br \/>\n\tGender section of the American Sociological Association.\n\t<\/li>\n<li> Mary Harrington, director of Institutional Research and<br \/>\n\tAssessment, has held leadership positions on the Staff<br \/>\n\tCouncil, the Chancellor&#8217;s Commission and several<br \/>\n\tprofessional organizations. Her office performed the data<br \/>\n\tcollection and analysis of pay equity at UM.\n\t<\/li>\n<li> Traci Mitchell, associate director of the S. Gale Denley<br \/>\n\tStudent Media Center, chaired the Chancellor&#8217;s Commission<br \/>\n\tin 2006-07.
