OXFORD, Miss. — Four women from the University of
\nMississippi are included in this year’s class of a
\nstatewide honor coordinated by the city of Madison Chamber
\nof Commerce.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\nRecently recognized as 2008 Dynamic Women of Mississippi
\nfrom UM were faculty members Nancy Bercaw and Kirsten
\nDellinger and staff members Mary Harrington and Traci
\nMitchell.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn its second year, the recognition program seeks to
\nannually spotlight women statewide for enhancing the
\nstate’s national and international prominence. They are
\nchosen from the fields of business, government, the arts,
\neducation, health care and community service.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe 25 honorees this year are featured in a desk calendar
\nproduced by the chamber. The calendar has the late Pat
\nFordice, former first lady, on its cover.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Ole Miss honorees were nominated by UM’s Office of the
\nChancellor, Office of the Vice Chancellor for University
\nRelations and Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender
\nStudies. All four women served on a subcommittee of the
\nChancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women that
\nauthored the UM Pay Equity and Advancement Report 2007. The
\nnomination included the statement: “They have demonstrated
\nsuperb university service in this endeavor as well as in
\nother efforts on our campus.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nFollowing are recent highlights of the honorees’ careers:
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n\t\u00a0<\/p>\n- Nancy Bercaw, associate professor of history and Southern
\n\tstudies, chairs the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status
\n\tof Women. As a member of the commission, she revised the
\n\tuniversity’s Stop-the-Clock policy and is drafting a
\n\tParental Leave Policy for faculty and staff. She has
\n\tcontributed time and service to progressive initiatives,
\n\tincluding the William Winter Institute for Racial
\n\tReconciliation and ALLIES, the safe-space program for gay,
\n\tlesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Her research
\n\treflects her interest in social rights. Her first book,
\n\tpublished in 2003, is titled “Gendered Freedoms: Race,
\n\tRights, and the Politics of the Household in the
\n\tMississippi Delta, 1861-1875” (University Press of
\n\tFlorida).\n\t<\/li>\n - Kirsten Dellinger, chair and associate professor of
\n\tsociology and anthropology, is the first woman to chair a
\n\tsocial sciences department at UM. She is active in campus
\n\tand national organizations that promote gender equality.
\n\tShe serves on the Chancellor’s Commission and on the
\n\tadvisory committee of the Sarah Isom Center for Women and
\n\tGender Studies. Nationally, she is a member of the
\n\teditorial boards of the journals Gender & Society and
\n\tSocial Problems, as well as the Council of the Sex and
\n\tGender section of the American Sociological Association.\n\t<\/li>\n - Mary Harrington, director of Institutional Research and
\n\tAssessment, has held leadership positions on the Staff
\n\tCouncil, the Chancellor’s Commission and several
\n\tprofessional organizations. Her office performed the data
\n\tcollection and analysis of pay equity at UM.\n\t<\/li>\n - Traci Mitchell, associate director of the S. Gale Denley
\n\tStudent Media Center, chaired the Chancellor’s Commission
\n\tin 2006-07. She formerly served as president of the Staff
\n\tCouncil, board member of the William Winter Institute for
\n\tRacial Reconciliation and as a member of numerous
\n\tuniversity committees.\n\t<\/li>\n<\/span>\n<\/ul>\n
