\nOXFORD, Miss. – The Office of Orientation and Parent
\nPrograms at the University of Mississippi is expanding and
\na recent UM graduate, who served as president of the
\nAssociated Student Body, is its new coordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nRebecca Bertrand, formerly of Kingwood, Texas, is
\nresponsible for planning, developing, coordinating and
\nevaluating orientation and parent programs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We were very lucky to be able to hire Rebecca,” said
\ndirector Whitman Smith. “Her experience working with
\norientation, her leadership qualities, ability to relate
\nwith students and parents, coupled with her positive
\nattitude and tireless work ethic, makes her the ideal
\nperson to work with new students and parents. Her
\nleadership experience will be a huge boost to our
\norientation leader training program, and I look forward to
\nhaving her on our team.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBertrand, who graduated from Ole Miss in May 2006 with a
\nbachelor’s degree in journalism and political science, is
\nworking on her master’s degree in higher education at UM.
\nAs ASB president during her senior year, she represented
\n15,000 students as liaison between the university
\nadministration and student body.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFollowing graduation, she interned with U.S. Sen. Trent
\nLott (R-Miss.), Houston City Council member Addie Wiseman
\nand U.S. Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas). After returning to UM, she
\nworked with the Department of Educational Leadership and
\nUniversity Development.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The University of Mississippi has provided me with many
\nprofessional development opportunities,” Bertrand said. “I
\nlook forward to beginning my career in the Office of
\nOrientation and Parent Programs and continuing my
\ninvolvement in the National Orientation Directors
\nAssociation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther duties of her position include assisting in the
\nplanning and implementation of orientation, overseeing
\ncommunication efforts with parents and assisting in the
\ndevelopment, implementation and assessment of departmental
\ngoals and objectives. The office has also expanded to take
\non the full duties of coordinating all parent programs,
\nwhich includes events like Summer Send-Offs and Fall Family
\nWeekend, as well as all summer, fall and spring orientation
\nprograms.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The coordination of events for the Ole Miss Parents
\nAssociation and involving families in the university
\ncommunity is something I look forward to the most,”
\nBertrand said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
