\nOXFORD, Miss. — Despite studio classes and midterm exams,
\nsix University of Mississippi senior art majors have
\ncompleted time-consuming artwork and scheduled Bachelor of
\nFine Arts thesis exhibitions this fall in Meek Hall Gallery
\n130.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEarl Dismuke of Winona, Sarah Haas of Mobile and Erin
\nRaspberry of Laurel are displaying their work through Nov.
\n23, with a gallery reception set for 4-6 p.m. Thursday
\n(Nov. 15).
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFrom Nov. 28 through Dec. 6, Scott Dutt of Belden, Sophie
\nGasquet of Natchez and Chris Sneed of New Albany will
\npresent their thesis exhibitions, including a 4-6 p.m.
\nreception Nov. 29.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe exhibits and receptions are free and open to the
\npublic.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHaas, who is showing 30 pieces of her work, admits that her
\nschedule leading up to the show was somewhat hectic.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOnly days before her exhibit was due, Hass said, “I just
\ntry to keep going and paint and paint and never really
\nstop. Really I have enough to put up for a show right now,
\nbut I’m not ready to. I’m just going to keep working until
\nthe very last night probably.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRasberry is showing 15 of her graphic design advertising
\npieces, and Dismuke’s display features eight sculptures
\nmade of paper pulp.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThesis shows help prepare students for life as working
\nartists and provide feedback from faculty members, said
\nPhilip Jackson, assistant professor.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlthough the students said they are excited about showing
\ntheir work, they agree the pace is demanding. Dismuke, who
\nusually works with cast iron, chose to sculpt with a new,
\nunfamiliar medium, which he said called for putting about
\neight hours a day into the project for a while.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRaspberry’s exhibit preparation included balancing his
\nschedule with his obligations as the art director of a
\nmarketing agency in Laurel.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe shows allow students an opportunity to curate and
\ndevelop a concept to represent visually, as well as hang
\ntheir pieces and design the presentation, “so the space
\nworks as well with the work as the work itself,” Jackson
\nsaid. They also must successfully defend their thesis
\ncollections as required for the BFA degree.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBeing able to balance work with other aspects of life is a
\nlearning experience and part of a professional artist’s
\nlife, Jackson said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The reality of it is that when they leave here and have a
\nreal life, they’re faced with the real issues,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHaas, who has rented studio space in Mobile with plans to
\nbecome a working artist after graduating in December, began
\ndeveloping the concept for her thesis collection during
\nspring semester and actually started putting it down on
\npaper over the summer. She said her greatest challenge for
\nthe exhibit was consistency.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I really enjoy a wide spectrum of media, and it was just
\nhard for me to write down and stick to a concept and my
\nproposal, something that I was going to finish out and not
\nstray from,” Haas said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
