\nOXFORD, Miss. — Billie-Jean Lalita Forrest of Toccopola, a
\nsophomore at the University of Mississippi, is among 50
\nstudents nationwide to receive a $1,000 Merit Award
\nscholarship presented by the National Society of Collegiate
\nScholars.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nA premedical student in UM’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale
\nHonors College, Forrest was inducted into NSCS in March.
\nNSCS recognizes outstanding academic achievement among
\nfirst- and second-year college students. Membership, by
\ninvitation only, is based on grade-point average and class
\nstanding.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Billie-Jean brings enormous focus and energy to every
\nchallenge, especially to the challenges she sets for
\nherself,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, Honors College
\ndean. “Independent and intellectual, she excels in finding
\nher own route to high achievement.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am honored to represent the University of Mississippi at
\nthe national level,” said Forrest, daughter of Dr. S.K.
\nForrest.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn June 2006, Forrest helped provide health care for
\nlow-income Hispanic women with high-risk pregnancies. She
\nsaid she hopes to practice medicine in a rural or
\ninner-city setting because she is concerned about the
\navailability of health care for all citizens.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAn avid writer, she is the author of three published books.
\nHer short story “Bodie” was selected from more than 100
\nsubmissions for inclusion in “The Collegiate Scholar,” an
\nonline publication produced by NSCS.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Billie-Jean’s work stood out because it was really
\ncompelling and engaging,” said Stephen E. Loflin, the honor
\nsociety’s executive director.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNSCS has more than 500,000 members in 228 collegiate
\nchapters across the country. Members are provided with a
\nnetwork of other members and alumni and exclusive access to
\nscholarships, career resources and leadership
\nopportunities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
