\nOXFORD, Miss. — As famed Mississippi artist Marie Hull
\ntraveled throughout the country and to Europe and northern
\nAfrica, she immortalized her memories in some of the most
\nvivid watercolor paintings imaginable.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe public is invited to view Hull’s work in the Skipwith
\nGallery of the University of Mississippi Museum. “Marie
\nHull: Home and Abroad” is on display through Dec. 20.
\nLocated at 5th Street and University Avenue, the museum is
\nopen 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1
\nto 4:30 p.m. Sunday. There is no admission charge.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Drawn from the Mississippi Museum of Art’s Permanent
\nCollection and supported by the National Endowment for the
\nArts, these works demonstrate Hull’s interest in exotic
\nlocations and architectural details,” said Albert Sperath,
\nmuseum director. “It also shows her dedication to the
\nlandscape and people of her native state.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBorn in 1890 in Summit, Hull spent most of her life in
\nJackson. She graduated from Belhaven College in 1908 with a
\nmusic degree. Two years later, Hull began taking art
\nlessons under the tutelage of Ailleen Phillips, who studied
\nat the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“In 1912, Hull herself went to the academy in Philadelphia
\nto study,” Sperath said. “Upon her return to Jackson, she
\nbegan a brief career in commercial art, before devoting her
\ntalents to painting portraiture and landscape.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring her 60-year career, Hull won numerous awards for her
\nwork, Sperath said. “She remained an influential figure in
\nMississippi’s art scene until her death in 1980.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
