\nOXFORD, Miss. — Joe Cahn, the self-proclaimed
\n“Commissioner of Tailgating,” is getting married Friday
\n(Nov. 16) in New Orleans. After a casual ceremony at St.
\nMichael’s Special School and reception at a local
\nrestaurant, Cahn and his bride plan to head off on their
\nhoneymoon to Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEschewing such popular honeymoon destinations as Mexico,
\nHawaii or Disney World, Cahn and soon-to-be-wife Karen hope
\nto spend Saturday strolling through the Grove, sharing
\nfried chicken, artichoke dip and maybe even sweet potato
\nbread pudding with Ole Miss and LSU football fans.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s the perfect place to start our honeymoon,” Cahn said.
\n“The Grove at Ole Miss is where Southern hospitality is
\ntruly at its finest. You have acres of people who are
\nsocializing and smiling and sharing their best with
\nothers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCahn, who is in his 12th season of touring pre-game parties
\nacross the nation, first visited the University of
\nMississippi in November 2003 for the Ole Miss-LSU game that
\ndecided the SEC Western Division championship. Later, he
\ndescribed the Grove as “the most single outstanding
\ntailgating area in the country” and often tells people that
\nUM offers the country’s best collegiate tailgating.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhen asked about premier tailgating spots, Cahn separates
\ncollege and NFL venues. He also puts military academies in
\na category of their own
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Army-Navy game is one of the most incredible events
\nanywhere, but the people there understand that football is
\nmerely a game,” he said. “Those players battle against each
\nother on the field, but soon they will be battling
\nalongside each other in the real world.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAmong collegiate venues, Cahn said Ole Miss is where
\n“Scarlett O’Hara meets the parking lot.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I can just see Scarlett at the Grove, raising her hand and
\nsaying, With God as my witness, I’ll never go hungry
\nagain,’ and then somebody in a tent behind her says, Of
\ncourse you won’t go hungry, Scarlett, here’s some fried
\nchicken!'”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring the past 11 seasons, Cahn has driven more than
\n500,000 miles and visited every NFL stadium and more than
\n70 college venues, consuming an amazing variety of foods
\nand learning firsthand about the culture and camaraderie of
\nfootball fans. He estimates that he has been to 500 games,
\nbut he rarely goes inside the stadium, preferring to enjoy
\nthe food and camaraderie outside before heading on to the
\nnext venue.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis year’s tour began Aug. 7 in New Orleans for an
\nexhibition game matching the NFL New Orleans Saints with
\nthe Pittsburgh Steelers. When he leaves Oxford this
\nweekend, he heads for Detroit for the Thanksgiving Day game
\nmatching the Detroit Lions with the Green Bay Packers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIt is the second marriage for Joe and Karen, who first wed
\nin 1984. Friday is their original anniversary, so it seemed
\nlike the perfect day to marry each other again, he said.
\nFor many years, they ran the New Orleans School of Cooking,
\nwith Joe teaching and Karen handling the business
\noperation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKaren is a registered nurse in Fort Worth, Texas, and she
\nhas a two-year commitment there, but she plans to join him
\nas often as possible on his tailgating journeys, he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We went to a Cowboys game last year, and as we walked
\naround, she kept pointing out things people were doing and
\nsaying, Look at that,’ and Oh, look over there,'” he said.
\n“She’s a great cook and loves tailgating, but I don’t think
\nshe’s ever been to a college game. I can’t wait to show her
\nwhat collegiate tailgating is all about at Ole Miss.”
