\nOXFORD, Miss. – The MorganWhite Group, a Mississippi
\ncompany headquartered in Jackson, has pledged $200,000 to
\ncreate the MorganWhite Group Scholarship Endowment in
\nInsurance and Human Resources Management at the University
\nof Mississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe company’s founders, Johnny Morgan and David White, are
\nboth graduates of UM’s School of Business Administration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of Johnny Morgan and
\nDavid White,” said Brian Reithel, business school dean.
\n“Our alumni’s involvement is so important to our business
\nschool and is crucial to the success of our current
\nstudents. We are truly grateful to the MorganWhite Group
\nfor this wonderful gift.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$160 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe scholarship is to assist deserving students with
\ndemonstrated financial need in their pursuit of degrees in
\ninsurance or human resources management in the School of
\nBusiness Administration. Scholarships are to be awarded in
\nthe amount of $1,000 per semester to full-time students who
\nmaintain at least a 3.0 GPA and can be awarded until the
\ncourse of study is completed.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We’ve had tremendous success, and we owe Ole Miss a lot of
\nthe credit,” said White, who earlier this year provided six
\nother scholarships for UM students to travel to London to
\nlearn about the international aspects of the industry. “We
\nalso wanted to give back to the business school to help
\ncreate future leaders in our industry. One thing Ole Miss
\nhas done for us is create lasting business relationships
\nthat we would never be able to put a dollar amount on.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHis business partner agreed. “We would challenge anyone
\nthat’s been successful in the insurance industry to support
\nthe industry by giving back to Ole Miss,” Morgan said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMorgan, who lives in Oxford, and White, who lives in
\nMadison, first met as roommates their freshman year at Ole
\nMiss. At that time, Morgan had a small laundry business and
\nWhite was working for his grandfather’s equipment business.
\nBoth hard workers and budding entrepreneurs, they
\nrecognized talent and drive in each other early on and
\ndecided to join forces.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We liked the idea of being in business together,” Morgan
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMorgan earned his business degree in 1970, and White
\nfollowed in 1972. After toiling in a few other separate
\nbusiness ventures, the two made plans to go into the
\nequipment business together, working for White’s
\ngrandfather. But when they learned the family business had
\nbeen sold, they had to come up with another plan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhen Morgan learned about the IRS Section 125 cafeteria
\nplan, which makes it possible for employers to offer
\nemployees a choice between cash salary and a variety of
\nnontaxable benefits, he saw a niche in the insurance
\nmarket. It was then that the two friends decided they could
\nfill that niche.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I didn’t know a lot about insurance,” Morgan said. “But I
\nsaw an opportunity in the industry, and the idea grew from
\nthere.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThey founded the MorganWhite Group in 1986. The business
\nstarted out primarily focusing on payroll deduction
\nsupplemental insurance products and has expanded to include
\nmedical, dental and vision insurance and products
\nespecially designed for a senior market.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn the 1990s, Morgan and White noticed an interesting thing
\nhappening in the Latin American insurance market: Many
\npeople in Latin American countries were purchasing
\ninsurance in American dollars because local currencies were
\nbeing devalued. Having a savvy business sense, Morgan and
\nWhite saw opportunity and began to administer major medical
\npolicies for insured persons residing in Latin America and
\nthe Caribbean who wanted access to U.S. hospital and
\nmedical services.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“David can work up a product for a market that fills a need
\nbetter than anyone I’ve ever seen,” Morgan said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn keeping with the trend of introducing innovative
\nsolutions by offering insurance products that cannot be
\nfound anywhere else, Morgan and White recently started a
\nseniors’ division. The MorganWhite Group formed MWG Senior
\nHealthcare to assist seniors in understanding the numerous
\nand sometimes complex changes taking place within the
\nMedicare system.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Beginning in 2009, more than 10,000 people a day will turn
\n60,” White said. “So I’m a big believer in the future of
\nsenior products.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 2005, the MorganWhite Group was divided into two new
\nentities, becoming MWG Employee Benefits Inc., a direct
\nsales division, and MWG Marketing Inc., an employee
\nbenefits agency. The MorganWhite Group has offices in
\nOxford, Greenville and Miami, and many clients in the
\nCaribbean and in Latin America who seek coverage in
\nAmerican hospitals and other U.S.-based medical
\nfacilities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
