\nOXFORD, Miss. — Ed Howard always had a zest for life. He
\nespecially loved horsing around with his nieces and
\nnephews, spending time with his wife, Rita, and following
\nOle Miss sports. He never slowed down, even when he got
\nsick, and was always trying new things such as watercolor
\npainting and playing guitar. Rita remembers that one of
\nEd’s favorite tunes to strum was “You Are My Sunshine.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nIt’s fitting then, that for many students pursuing business
\ndegrees at the University of Mississippi, the Carl Edward
\n“Ed” Howard Memorial Scholarship for Insurance Excellence
\nmay offer a ray of hope.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTo ensure a lasting tribute, Rita Howard and her family and
\nfriends have endowed the scholarship with a $110,000 gift
\nto Ed’s alma mater through the School of Business
\nAdministration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Ed really loved Ole Miss,” Rita said. “We felt this would
\nbe such an appropriate way to honor him. I think this would
\nhave pleased him.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEd, a native of Beaumont, earned his bachelor’s degree in
\nfinance in 1980. He moved to Dallas, where, through a
\nmutual friend, he met Rita, also an alumna of UM’s business
\nschool. They hit it off instantly and were married in 1988.
\nEd worked most of his professional career at State Farm
\nInsurance. He held various underwriting positions during
\nhis 23-year career.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn 2005, Ed was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a rare form of
\ncancer. He lost his battle with the disease that same
\nyear.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe is remembered by many who knew him as fun-loving and
\nfull of life. More than 100 of his friends and co-workers
\nat State Farm have contributed to the scholarship fund.
\nRita, who serves as State Farm’s vice president-agency in
\nHouston, Texas, said she has been overwhelmed by the
\ngenerosity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe State Farm Companies Foundation matches charitable
\ncontributions up to $3,000 a year that State Farm
\nassociates, agents or retirees make to colleges and
\nuniversities in the U.S. and Canada.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRecipients of the Ed Howard Memorial Scholarship are to be
\nfull-time students majoring in risk management and
\ninsurance. Contingent upon maintaining at least a 3.0
\ngrade-point average, the scholarship may also be used for
\nstudy abroad through the School of Business Administration
\nduring the summer of the recipient’s senior year. The
\nrecipient also is paired with a mentor, a unique aspect of
\nthe scholarship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are deeply grateful for the generosity that Rita and
\nher family have shown in making this gift as a remembrance
\nof Ed Howard,” said Larry Cox, chair of the risk management
\nand insurance program. “This is a very special scholarship,
\nensuring that especially dedicated students who aspire to
\ncareers in risk management and insurance will get an
\neducation that will jump-start their careers.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. MomentUM, which
\nends in December 2008, already has raised more than $160
\nmillion for scholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty
\nsupport, a basketball practice facility, residential
\ncolleges and a new law school on the Oxford campus. Also in
\nthe plan is a cancer center at the UM Medical Center in
\nJackson.
