\nOXFORD, Miss. — Since the William Winter Institute for
\nRacial Reconciliation kicked off its “Welcome Table: A Year
\nof Dialogue on Race” program in June, it has held
\nsuccessful events and gained new members.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nComing events for the institute include a concert in
\nJackson and a series of workshops to be held throughout the
\nstate.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe concert, titled “The Welcome Table: A Seasonal
\nConcert,” is scheduled Nov. 30 at Millsaps College. The
\nprogram celebrates the holiday season and features music
\nfrom Hebrew, Indian, Islamic, Kwanzaa and Christian
\ntraditions.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPerformances are set for 6 and 8 p.m. in the Academic
\nComplex Recital Hall, with a reception to follow. There is
\nno admission charge but donations are to be accepted at the
\ndoor. Proceeds go to support rehabilitation patients at the
\nUniversity Rehab Center, which is co-sponsoring the

\nIn the institute’s other efforts, Director Susan Glisson
\nrecently met with West Point community members about
\nbeginning discussions in their town.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“West Point is one of the newest members of the Welcome
\nTable and we are more than proud to be involved with such a
\nwonderful project,” said Robin Perry of West Point. “We
\nfeel that togetherness and inclusiveness is the only way to
\nbuild the community. We must become the change we want to
\nsee in our homes, communities, state, and nation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe group is in the planning stages of the project, which
\ninvolves talking about the racial problems within the
\ncommunity, Perry said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The topic of race among different ethnicities in this
\ncommunity has been much like the elephant in the room.
\nEveryone knows there is a problem, but no one wants to
\nacknowledge it,” Perry said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInstitute staff have not only been meeting with town
\nleaders across Mississippi, but they have also sponsored
\nother events, including “The OMazing Race,” held recently
\non the Oxford campus. Based on the CBS television series
\n“The Amazing Race,” its purpose was to place students from
\ndifferent ethnicities, religions, ages and other
\ndescriptive attributes in an environment where they had the
\nopportunity to explore their perspectives and opinions
\nabout people seemingly unlike themselves. They were placed
\non ethnically diverse teams to participate in the
\ncompetition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe institute also co-sponsored “Reconciliation: A Personal
\nJourney” with the Jackson Free Press at Millsaps College.
\nPanel members shared stories of racial reconciliation. The
\nforum featured Pastor Shirley Beach, Pastor Doris Norman
\nand Bishop Stanley B. Searcy from the New Hope Baptist
\nChurch in Natchez.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAdditionally, members of the institute, the Emmett Till
\nMemorial Commission and more than 400 other people gathered
\nat the Sumner Courthouse for a memorial ceremony. At the
\nevent, the ETMC officially read a resolution, apologizing
\nto the family of Emmett Till and dedicated a marker
\ncommemorating the murder case. Following the ceremony, bus
\ntours were offered to significant sites.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe institute and the ETMC are working to create a driving
\ntour with markers, a brochure on the events and directions
\nto the significant sites.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe institute is also collaborating with the Fetzer
\nInstitute to host a series of workshops based on racial
\nreconciliation and social integration statewide.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This partnering will serve to expand opportunities to
\nreach people throughout the state,” said April Grayson,
\nproject coordinator for the institute.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
