\nOXFORD, Miss. — A University of Mississippi law professor
\nis scheduled to join space law experts and educators from
\naround the world Dec. 3-4 in Vienna to explore the
\npossibility of a basic course on space law as requested by
\na subcommittee of the United Nations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nJoanne Gabrynowicz, law professor and director of the
\nNational Remote Sensing, Air and Space Law Center at the UM
\nlaw school, frequently travels to other countries to
\naddress the growing area of law dealing with space. The
\nU.N. meeting will further her visibility as an
\ninternational space law expert.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn a letter from the United Nations Office for Outer Space
\nAffairs, Niklas Hedman, chief of the committee services and
\nresearch section of the office, said the Legal Subcommittee
\nof the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space
\nrequested that the Office for Outer Space Affairs continue
\nexploring the possibility of developing a curriculum for a
\nbasic course on space law that could be used in particular
\nfor the benefit of developing countries.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe courses are to be developed by initiating space law
\nstudies as appropriate in regional centers of space science
\nand technology education associated with the United
\nNations. Gabrynowicz has been asked to participate in “the
\nelaboration of education curricula in space law” for those
\nregional centers, according to Hedman’s letter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEarly in the conference, representatives from the U.N.
\ncenters are slated to make presentations on their
\nexperience in space law education, specifically education
\nrelated to remote sensing, satellite meteorology, satellite
\ncommunications and space science.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My job will be to listen and advise,” Gabrynowicz said.
\n“Through their presentations, I will learn what the U.N.
\ncenters need and want. Then, I will advise them on what
\ncontent has to be in the space law curriculum to meet their
\nneeds.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe National Remote Sensing, Air and Space Law Center at UM
\nwas established in 1999. The first and only such center in
\nthe United States, it provides information resources on the
\nlegal aspects of human activities using aerospace
\ntechnologies. It is available to serve federal, state and
\nlocal government in a non-advocacy capacity to conduct
\nnarrowly tailored legal research and to answer legal
\nquestions of concern to the aerospace and geospatial
\nindustry.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGabrynowicz, a graduate of the Cardozo School of Law at
\nYeshiva University, joined the UM faculty in 2001 as the
\ncenter’s first permanent director and research professor of
\nlaw. She received the 2001 Women in Aerospace Outstanding
\nInternational Award for her work and contributions to the
\nbroad spectrum of aerospace issues.
