\nOXFORD, Miss — An emergency assistance fund created four
\nyears ago to help with medical-related expenses for the
\nchildren of University of Mississippi employees and
\nstudents is itself in need of assistance.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe Friends of Children Fund helps with the costs of
\ntravel, food and lodging when a faculty, staff or student’s
\nchild is hospitalized or must receive medical care and the
\nfamily needs help with travel expenses.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe fund has assisted 11 families since 2003. Seven
\nfamilies have received $14,500 in just the last year and
\nthe need is growing, said Kim Shackelford, associate
\nprofessor of social work and chair of the committee that
\nmanages the account. Many of the children have multiple
\nhospitalizations and lengthy hospital stays.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I have met wonderful families at Ole Miss who have shown
\ngreat strength and faith during the extraordinary
\ncircumstances that come with having a child with severe
\nmedical problems,” Shackelford said. “I have witnessed the
\nresults of miraculous surgeries and been a witness to the
\nlove and gratitude of the children who benefit from this
\nfund.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShackelford told the story of 5-year-old Isabelle, who was
\nto travel to Chicago for a difficult surgery. Isabelle had
\na hard time understanding why strangers would donate money
\nto help. The little girl’s parents explained this is just
\nwhat you should do when you have something to give and
\nsomeone else needs what you have.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIsabelle went to her room and dumped all the money out of
\nher piggy bank and wrote the following note: “Ms. Kim,
\nthank you for helping us! I (heart) u. Here is my gift.
\nIsabelle.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShackelford received the note and the change in a plastic
\nbaggie.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The children who are helped by this fund are not only
\ngetting their medical needs met, they are also learning
\nabout giving to others and helping whenever and however
\nthey are able,” she said. “I am very proud that the Ole
\nMiss community has this fund, and I am humbled by these
\nchildren and what they overcome everyday.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe committee is expanding its services by developing a Web
\nsite that will offer guidance and information for families.
\nIt also plans to offer support, education and information
\ngroups for parents, siblings and the children with severe
\nor chronic medical situations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShackelford said the families who have benefited from the
\nFriends of the Children Fund want to give back to others
\nwho are going through the same circumstances in their
\nlives.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGifts to the Friends of the Children Fund are
\ntax-deductible. Checks should be made to the Friends of the
\nChildren Fund and sent to the attention of Kim Shackelford,
