Photo by Paul Mitchell\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8212; High school students visited the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi recently for a statewide<br \/>\nscience-engineering-mathematics poster competition and<br \/>\nworkshops on an upcoming catapult competition.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The Mississippi Junior Academy of Science sponsored the<br \/>\nposter competition, hosted at UM this year for the third<br \/>\ntime. Fourteen students in grades 9-12 competed, and $4,700<br \/>\nwas awarded by MJAS and the Mississippi Academy of<br \/>\nSciences. Winners are to participate in the 2008 American<br \/>\nJunior Academy of Science Conference at the Massachusetts<br \/>\nInstitute of Technology in February.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Students participating in these sessions not only present<br \/>\ntheir posters, they also have the opportunity to attend<br \/>\nprofessional scientific conferences and publish their work<br \/>\nin the MAS Scientific Journal,&#8221; said Maxine Woolsey,<br \/>\ndirector of MJAS and educational outreach specialist for<br \/>\nthe School of Engineering. &#8220;These opportunities give<br \/>\nstudents visions of where they would like to be in a few<br \/>\nyears and provide a purpose to their education.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Asanka Nanayakkara of Oxford, a junior at the Mississippi<br \/>\nSchool for Mathematics and Science in Columbus, received<br \/>\nthe Clyde O. Sheely Award and a $1,000 reimbursement<br \/>\nscholarship toward the MIT competition. Making the<br \/>\npresentation was MAS representative Robert Fritzius, a<br \/>\njudge for the UM competition.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Nanayakkara&#8217;s biochemistry poster was titled<br \/>\n&#8220;Acetylcholinesterse Inhibitors from Herbs as Treatments<br \/>\nfor Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease.&#8221; He is the son of Dhammika<br \/>\nNanayakkara and Kumundini Meepagala.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Oxford High School sophomore Thien Che was awarded the<br \/>\nfirst-place trophy for grades 9-10 and a $500 reimbursement<br \/>\nscholarship toward the MIT competition. Che&#8217;s physics<br \/>\nposter was titled&#8221;Magnus Effect in Tennis.&#8221; His parents<br \/>\nare Tri and Van Che.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Other winners were Natalie Omattage of Cleveland, Xiaotion<br \/>\nLiu of Starkville, La&#8217;Mont Sutton of Jackson, Sandesh<br \/>\nShettar of Ridgeland and Nathan Barnett of Brandon.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Omattage, a senior at MSMS, was presented the Mississippi<br \/>\nAcademy of Science Award and a $1,000 scholarship. Her<br \/>\nbiology poster was titled &#8220;Development of Biosensors for<br \/>\nDetecting Hazardous Chemicals.&#8221; She is the daughter of O.P.<br \/>\nand Thishya Perera.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Liu, a senior at MSMS, received the first-place trophy for<br \/>\ngrades 11-12 and a $500 scholarship. His chemistry poster<br \/>\nwas titled &#8220;Catalytic Gasoline Synthesis.&#8221; His parents are<br \/>\nWenxuan Liu and Yujie Zhang.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Sutton, a senior at Murrah High School, was awarded the<br \/>\nsecond-place trophy for grades 11-12 and a $300<br \/>\nscholarship. His biology poster was titled &#8220;Role of Tissue<br \/>\nTransglutaminase Type 2 in Calbindin D28k Interaction with<br \/>\nAtaxin-1.&#8221; He is the son of La&#8217;Rue and Mary Sutton.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Shettar, a senior at St. Andrew&#8217;s Episcopal School, was<br \/>\npresented the third-place trophy in behavioral science for<br \/>\ngrades 11-12 and a $300 scholarship. His poster was titled<br \/>\n&#8220;A Demographic Analysis of Smokers Seeking Cessation<br \/>\nTreatment at the ACT Center.&#8221; He is the son of Shambhavi<br \/>\nand Shashidhar Shettar.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Barnett, a senior at MSMS, received the third-place trophy<br \/>\nin chemistry for grades 11-12 and a $500 scholarship. His<br \/>\nposter was titled &#8220;Preparation of Activated 4-Cyanodithio<br \/>\nPentanoic Acid and RAFT Polymerization of Free Amine<br \/>\nContaining Polymers.&#8221; He is the son of Larry and Sandra<br \/>\nBarnett.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;It was a pleasure judging the posters as the students were<br \/>\nextremely knowledgeable of their research and were very<br \/>\nwell prepared for their presentations,&#8221; said poster judge<br \/>\nBob Woolsey, director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources<br \/>\nInstitute at UM. &#8220;I have judged science fairs and the MJAS<br \/>\nposter sessions in previous years; these are some of the<br \/>\nbrightest and most impressive students I have talked with.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The visiting students also attended two workshops on<br \/>\nengineering a trebuchet, which is a gravity-driven<br \/>\ncatapult. The information sessions were in preparation for<br \/>\nthe students to participate in the catapult competition<br \/>\nscheduled Feb. 5, 2008 in the Ole Miss Indoor Practice<br \/>\nFacility.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Workshop presenter Ken Sleeper, associate director of MJAS<br \/>\nand project coordinator with MMRI, explained how to design<br \/>\nand construct a trebuchet to meet the specifications<br \/>\nrequired for the competition.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Speakers for the second workshop were local physician Will<br \/>\nDabbs, who is also trained in mechanical engineering, and<br \/>\nportrait artist Jason Bouldin of Oxford.
