\nOXFORD, Miss. — An updated version of the Greek comedy
\n“Lysistrata” featuring a modern political twist is
\nscheduled for performances at the University of Mississippi
\nNov. 28-Dec. 2 .<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nProduced by the Department of Theatre Arts, the play is to
\nbe staged in Meek Hall Auditorium at 8 p.m. Wednesday and
\nThursday, 7 and 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m.
\nSunday.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTickets are $10.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors and
\nchildren, and $7 for Ole Miss students with valid IDs.
\nTickets are available by calling the UM Box Office at
\n662-915-7411 or visiting the box office, which is located
\nin the Student Union.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our modernized version of ‘Lysistrata’ purely shows the
\naudience our political stance on the war between the United
\nStates and Iraq,” said director Jim Shollenberger,
\nprofessor of theatre arts.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe department’s version features a wide range of
\nmodern-day characters, Shollenberger said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We have taken both political and entertainment figures and
\ndivided them into the good guys and the bad guys. Our cast
\nportrays people from both ends of the political spectrum,
\nfrom Rosie O’Donnell and Whoopi Goldberg to George W. Bush
\nand Dick Chaney,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDescribing the play as being risque, sexual and political,
\nShollenberger said, “I want to be straightforward and say
\nthat we’re not making any apology for our political message
\nand point of views.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHeather McMahan of Atlanta, who portrays Rosie O’Donnell,
\nsaid the production is unlike anything the theatre
\ndepartment has ever done.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This show is hysterically funny. It plays on a little dirt
\nhumor, but in the long run delivers a strong political
\nmessage,” said McMahan, a junior theatre arts major.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMcMahan said that the costumes for this show are extremely
\ndetailed and add an extra level of interest for the
\naudience to enjoy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“‘Lysistrata’ is especially unique because we are
\nincorporating a lot of facial and body aesthetics,” said
\nMcMahan. “It takes me two-and-a-half hours to get into my
\n300- to 400-pound body suit that I wear to help portray an
\neven more ‘lifelike’ version of Rosie O’Donnell.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEncouraging support from the Lafayette-Oxford-University
\ncommunity, McMahan said, “Our cast and crew have worked so
\nhard on this production. This play showcases our hard work
\nand dedication to the Ole Miss Theatre Department, and we
\ngreatly appreciate support from our fellow students and
\ncommunity.”
