OXFORD, Miss. — Ever since his father took him to visit a
\nbranch of the New York Stock Exchange, Michael Strojny knew
\nhe would grow up to be a businessman.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\n“I remember all the clack, clack, clacking,” Strojny said.
\n“It was very exciting, and I knew from then on that I
\nwanted to work in business. My father was an engineer, but
\nhe was also a passionate investor, and I dreamed of the day
\nI would be, too.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe University of Mississippi School of Business
\nAdministration provided a solid background to help Strojny
\nmake his dream a reality. He graduated in 1968 with a
\nbachelor’s of science in business administration and later
\nearned a master’s from the University of Southern
\nMississippi and a specialist’s degree from William Carey
\nCollege.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nWhile at Ole Miss, Strojny met his future wife, Jane, a
\nPontotoc County native. They married in 1970 and would
\nlater become business partners as well. She earned her
\nbachelor’s degree in education from UM and later completed
\na master’s in education from USM..
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIn 1975, the couple opened Strojny and Strojny Financial
\nServices in Biloxi. The business started small, at their
\nkitchen table, where they prepared tax returns for friends
\nand neighbors. But it kept growing, and was moved from the
\nkitchen table to a spare bedroom, then to the current six
\noffices in and around the Gulf Coast. The business has
\ngrown to include tax, accounting and investment services,
\nas well as business consultations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nStrojny credits much of his success to Ole Miss and his
\nmentors while in school. That’s the reason he and Jane have
\ngiven $100,000 to seed the Michael and Jane Strojny
\nScholarship Endowment in Business.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Ole Miss was such a good experience for me,” Strojny said.
\n“I would like this scholarship to help someone who might
\nnot otherwise be able to stay in school. Plus, Ole Miss
\nbusiness students will play a part in developing the future
\nleaders of our company. We recruit at least two or three
\nOle Miss students to come work for us every year.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$160 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are so grateful for this generous gift from Michael and
\nJane Strojny,” said Shannon Woodward, development officer
\nfor the business school. “With scholarships like this one,
\nthe School of Business Administration can compete for the
\nbest and brightest students and continue to supply a
\ntop-notch business education for Mississippians.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAlthough Strojny grew up on the East Coast, just outside
\nthe Washington, D.C., metro area, he’s a Southerner at
\nheart. His interest in history and studying the Civil War
\nbrought him down South for college campus tours.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I knew I wanted to go to school in the South, and I looked
\nat Emory, LSU and Auburn,” he said. “But when I came to Ole
\nMiss, I knew it felt right. It was small and homey. I knew
\nit would be a good educational environment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nBut he found that Ole Miss was more than history books and
\nterm papers. It was home, full of good friends and warmth.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“When there wasn’t a home football game, there was no one
\non campus on the weekends,” Strojny remembers. I didn’t
\nhave a car, and people knew I didn’t really have anywhere
\nto go because I wasn’t from around here. So someone in my
\ndorm would always knock on my door and offer to take me
\nhome with them for the weekend. It was such a kind and
\nconsiderate thing, and I quickly found out that’s the way
\nMississippians are.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nIt was also a place to grow his business.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“I felt the South would be the place to be in the future,”
\nStrojny said. “The economy was changing from an agrarian
\neconomy to being more business-oriented, so I felt there
\nwould be room for lots of jobs and room for growth.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nAs the family business grew, so did the family itself. They
\nhave a son, Michael. They also have a daughter, Jennifer,
\nwho received an MBA from Ole Miss in 1999. Jennifer met her
\nhusband, Kerry Milligan, in the Grove on campus. And so the
\nOle Miss tradition continues.
