\nOXFORD, Miss. — When most University of Mississippi
\nfaculty and staff are heading home each workday to spend
\nthe evening with family, another group of employees arrives
\nfor a night shift of cleaning, straightening, repairing and
\npreparing the campus for another day.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nAs a way for other UM employees to thank these service
\nworkers, the 10th annual “Books and Bears” event is under
\nway.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our custodians, groundskeepers and other Physical Plant
\nstaff members take pride in the university, and that is
\nreflected through their dedicated work,” said Jan Murray,
\nassociate dean of liberal arts and an organizer of the
\nevent.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOther UM staff and faculty are asked to donate new teddy
\nbears, children’s books and toys for the employees’
\nchildren. Donated items for this year’s drive are to be
\ndistributed after a 10 a.m. reception for the honored
\nworkers Friday, Dec. 14, in the Student Union Ballroom.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDonations to the drive can be dropped off by Thursday, Dec.
\n13, at several campus locations: Graduate School in the old
\nPublic Relations Building, provost’s office in the Lyceum,
\nfirst floor in Ventress Hall, mathematics department in
\nHume Hall, UM Box Office in the Student Union, room 350 of
\nMartindale Hall and the second floor of Vardaman Hall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our service workers provide the fuel which powers the UM
\nengine,” said Donald Cole, associate provost and assistant
\nto the chancellor for multicultural affairs. “Because of
\ntheir dedicated service to the university, we are able to
\nmaintain our margin of excellence. As members of the UM
\nfamily, they reflect the core values of diligent work,
\noptimism and family dedication inherent in our
\ninstitution.”
