\nOXFORD, Miss. — To kick off the holiday season for the
\nUniversity of Mississippi and Oxford community, the annual
\nChristmas parade and tree lighting are set for Monday (Dec.
\n3), with the theme “Christmas Time in Oxford.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nSponsored by the Oxford Lions Club and UM’s Student
\nProgramming Board and Department of Campus Programming,
\nactivities begin with the parade at 7 p.m., followed by the
\ntree lighting at 8:15.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJennifer Taylor, director of Campus Programming, said the
\nevents are a tradition to welcome the holiday season. “This
\nis a time to remind everyone how thankful we are for the
\nUniversity and Oxford community.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe parade gets under way at Mid-town Shopping Center,
\nwinding through the Oxford Square and down University
\nAvenue to the Ole Miss campus. Local organizations sponsor
\nfloats, walking groups and groups riding in vehicles. At
\nthe end of the parade on Lyceum Circle, lighting of the UM
\nChristmas tree takes place and trophies will be presented
\nto the first-, second- and third-place overall winning
\nfloats, as well as best nonprofit float, best for-profit
\nfloat and best church float.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nParticipants in the tree lighting ceremony include Vice
\nChancellor for Student Life Larry Ridgeway and Associated
\nStudent Body President Drew Taggart. Music is to be
\nprovided by the Ole Miss Gospel Choir. Winner of the
\nChristmas ornament contest will be announced at the
\nlighting, with a $150 award given to the winning campus
\norganization. All ornaments entered in the contest are to
\nbe displayed on the Christmas tree in the Student Union
\nlobby.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We encourage the entire Lafayette-Oxford-University
\ncommunity to come out and enjoy the Christmas parade and
\ntree-lighting ceremony,” said Taylor. “We look forward to a
\nvery festive and entertaining event.”
