\nSophomore pre-med biology major Karah LaMon Evans, a
\nHickory native, has programmed software that stores coupon
\nbar codes on a chip in the form of a convenient key chain
\ndevice.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nEvans conceived the idea for the software about a year ago.
\nAll the parts for the hardware already existed, but he
\ndeveloped an original software program that allows a chip
\nto store the codes of coupons selected by the consumer.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
“My mother was a big coupon person,” Evans said. “She had
\narthritis, and I wanted to figure out how I could allow her
\nto not clip coupons anymore.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
\nThe cashier swipes the device at the register, and the
\namount of the recorded coupons is automatically deducted
\nfrom the bill. Evans said it saves time for both the
\ncustomer and cashier. Also, stores participating in the
\nservice would no longer have to keep up with thousands of
\ncoupons to send in each month, waiting as many as 30 days
\nto be reimbursed, he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Stores would get money directly deposited into their
\naccounts within 48 to 72 hours,” he said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nEvans has filed for a provisional patent to begin the
\nprocess of establishing a full patent. “It is a low-cost
\nway of establishing who filed first,” he explained.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe provisional patent protects the invention for one year.
\nThis period also allows the inventor to locate funding for
\nthe patent, which the Patent Office informed Evans could
\ncost as much as $3,500. He has not yet sought help from
\ninvestors but is considering the idea.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe software has been tested successfully in Oxford-area
\ngrocery stores, he said. Distributors are also interested
\nin the device, as it could save money required for printing
\nfull coupons.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nEvans, 33, has an extensive background in electronics and
\ncomputers that stems from Christmas 1982, when his mother
\ngave him his first computer at age 8. At age 9, he began
\nto write programs in BASIC.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“My mother would get me subscriptions to computer
\nmagazines, and they would have sample codes in them,” he
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe explained that he would modify the sample codes in the
\nmagazines to perform different actions. A few years later,
\nhe began writing codes in Pascal, a computer programming
\nlanguage originally intended to teach students structured
\nprogramming.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe graduated in 1992 from Newton County High School in
\nDecatur and continued his education at the University of
\nSouthern Mississippi in the electronics engineering
\ntechnology program. After three years, he left school to
\npursue a job offer with an electronics company in Memphis.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHe has held various jobs in the field, including one as
\nsenior systems programmer with FedEx Corporate Services.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHowever, a chronic medical condition forced him to quit
\nwork and seek treatment. After a few surgical procedures
\nand several medications, Evans says that he is able to
\nfunction well.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nDr. Charles Bryant, an internal medicine and lung
\nspecialist in Meridian, inspired Evans to return to school
\nand enroll in pre-med. He attends classes and works at the
\nDivision of University Communications on campus through the
\nFederal Work-Study program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“Evans is a mature, intelligent student who is
\nwell-grounded. He has a direction for his life, and I have
\nno doubt that he will attain all the goals he sets for
\nhimself,” said Evans’ co-worker Debbie Binkley, operations
\nmanager for University Communications.
