OXFORD, Miss. – Jim Barksdale, former president and CEO of
\nNetscape Communications Corp., and his wife, Donna, are
\ngiving $12.8 million to the University of Mississippi to
\nsupport and enrich educational opportunities in the Sally
\nMcDonnell Barksdale Honors College
\n
\n“The generosity and commitment of the Barksdale family have
\nensured that the University of Mississippi remains a
\npremier public education institution,” said Chancellor
\nRobert Khayat. “This recent gift to the Sally McDonnell
\nBarksdale Honors College will enable us to continue to
\nattract the state’s most high-performing students and
\nprovide them with a vibrant center of academic excellence.
\nWe are profoundly grateful to Jim and Donna Barksdale for
\ntheir continued support.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n


This is Barksdale’s fourth major gift to the SMBHC, which
\nhe, along with his late wife, Sally, helped establish in
\n1997.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n“Due to the leadership of Chancellor Khayat and Dean
\nSullivan-Gonz\u00e1lez, the Honors College has become a center
\nfor academic excellence within the University of
\nMississippi, and we are proud to be associated with the
\nfine faculty, staff, students and alumni of the Honors
\nCollege,” Barksdale said. “Through this gift we will expand
\nthe range of educational opportunities provided by the
\nHonors College, and hope to convince some of Mississippi’s
\nbrightest young minds to call Mississippi their home after
\ngraduation.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAdministered over a five-year period, the funds are to be
\nused to help the college reach its target enrollment of
\n1,000 students, expand its course offerings, increase staff
\nand support student field experiences. A defining
\ncharacteristic of the SMBHC, the field experiences enable
\nhonors students to learn and grow personally by traveling
\nand exploring the world.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’ve been so stunned; we are very happy and very excited
\nabout this,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonz\u00e1lez, SMBHC dean.
\n“This generous gift from Jim Barksdale will enable us to
\ncontinue providing an enriched honors experience, as well
\nas to bring in additional qualified students. We believe
\nthere are many more high-achieving students in Mississippi
\nwho want to enjoy what we offer.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPart of the funds will also be used to increase the number
\nof Honors College scholarships from 14 to 21. The new
\nscholarships are to be awarded to freshmen entering this
\nfall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Being a member of the Honors College has truly been a
\nblessing for me, especially since most of my financial aid
\nis from the scholarship I’ve received through it,” said
\nApril Smith, a sophomore accounting major from Crenshaw.
\n“The Honors College has given me so many opportunities I
\nwould not have otherwise had. The professors are engaging,
\nand I feel challenged every day.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDustin Markle, an SMBHC graduate and Barksdale Scholarship
\nrecipient, agreed.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Personally, I can trace every positive academic experience
\nI had at Ole Miss to the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors
\nCollege,” said Markle, who graduated in 2007 with a degree
\nin biochemistry and is enrolled at the UM Medical Center in
\nJackson. “From the first day as a freshman to the last day
\nas a senior, I was challenged personally and academically.
\nMy experiences with the Honors College had a direct effect
\non getting me where I am today. The Barksdale Scholarship
\nwas a major factor that drew me to the Honors College and
\nOle Miss. I appreciate the Barksdales’ generosity, which
\nhas inspired me to strive to give back one day.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe SMBHC was a key to UM’s successful quest to shelter a
\nchapter of the prestigious honor society Phi Beta Kappa. In
\n2005, SMBHC was named by Reader’s Digest as one of the
\nthree finest honors colleges in the nation.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Outstanding support from alumni, dedicated administrative
\nstaff and superb faculty — this is the recipe for one of
\nthe most successful honors colleges in the country,” said
\nSullivan-Gonz\u00e1lez.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAfter earning his bachelor’s degree from UM in 1965,
\nBarksdale held key leadership positions in some of the
\nworld’s most successful companies, including FedEx and AT&T
\nWireless Services. Along with providing funding to create
\nthe SMBHC, Barksdale also established a scholarship program
\nat the UM Medical Center and founded the Barksdale Reading
\nInstitute and the Mississippi Principal Corps, a program
\ndesigned to better train the state’s school principals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December, already has raised more than $160
\nmillion for scholarships, graduate fellowships, faculty
\nsupport, a basketball practice facility, residential
\ncolleges and a new law school on the Oxford campus. Also in
\nthe plan is a cancer center at the Medical Center.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
