{"id":436,"date":"2008-01-15T07:29:15","date_gmt":"2008-01-15T13:29:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=436"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:47","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:47","slug":"brown-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/brown-bags\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Studies Spring Brown Bag Lunch Programs to Focus on Oxford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/stock?art\/umbrownbag.jpg\" alt=\"umbrownbag.jpg\" style=\"margin: 10px; width: 117px; height: 200px; float: right\" title=\"umbrownbag.jpg\" height=\"200\" width=\"117\" \/><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Past and present ways of life in Oxford are<br \/>\nthe focus of the spring Brown Bag Lunch and Lecture Series<br \/>\nat the University of Mississippi&#8217;s Center for the Study of<br \/>\nSouthern Culture.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Beginning Jan. 23 and continuing each Wednesday for 13<br \/>\nweeks except during spring break, the free, public programs<br \/>\nare scheduled at noon in the Tupelo Room of Barnard<br \/>\nObservatory. The programs offer personal insight from<br \/>\nuniversity members, including documentary film producers,<br \/>\nprofessors and Southern studies graduate students, as well<br \/>\nas other Oxonians.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/><span>The first program each month, beginning in February,<br \/>\nfeatures staff from UM&#8217;s Center for Documentary Projects<br \/>\ndiscussing their project of documenting life in the<br \/>\nLafayette-Oxford-University community through videotaped<br \/>\noral histories. Their idea is to preserve personalities and<br \/>\nmemories of this rapidly changing small Southern town by<br \/>\ninterviewing people from every corner of the community.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;We all recognize that the Oxford area is in the middle of<br \/>\nsome profound change,&#8221; said Andy Harper, director of media<br \/>\nproduction and distributed learning. &#8220;That realization<br \/>\nshould inspire us to reflect on the history of our<br \/>\ncommunity as we look toward its future. We hope to use<br \/>\nthese brown bag forums to open that dialogue and this<br \/>\ndocumentary series to tell the stories.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Joe York, producer\/director, said the staff is working a<br \/>\ndocumentary about the old Hoka theater, which will be the<br \/>\nfocus of the Feb. 6 lecture.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;This film, titled &#8216;Sorry, We&#8217;re Open,&#8217; is set to play at<br \/>\nthe Oxford Film Festival on Feb. 7, and tells the story of<br \/>\nthe Hoka, a cotton warehouse-turned-movie theater that<br \/>\nserved as the heart of Oxford&#8217;s cultural and<br \/>\ncounter-cultural life from the late 1970s through the<br \/>\nmiddle 1990s,&#8221; York said. &#8220;As the project continues, we<br \/>\nhope to turn our lens at many different aspects of the life<br \/>\nof this town and we plan to use the upcoming brown bags to<br \/>\nshowcase some of the footage we&#8217;ve already shot for the<br \/>\nHoka documentary, as well as to discuss possible ideas for<br \/>\nfurther documentaries with the community.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>York was named Food Filmmaker of the Year at the New York<br \/>\nCity Food Festival in 2007.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Other topics of discussion for the spring brown bags<br \/>\ninclude the native pleasures of north Mississippi, how the<br \/>\nAmerican dream comes true in Oxford and gardening.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Following is a list of the brown bag lectures:<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Jan. 23<\/b> &#8211; &#8220;A Brainstorming Session for Stories: Questions<br \/>\nfor Oxonians on Oxford,&#8221; Harper and York.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Jan. 30<\/b> &#8211; &#8220;A Reading and Conversation with Jack Pendarvis:<br \/>\n&#8216;Awesome,'&#8221; Jack Pendarvis, UM&#8217;s 2007 Grisham<br \/>\nwriter-in-residence, and Tom Franklin, UM&#8217;s 2001 Grisham<br \/>\nwriter-in-residence.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Feb. 6 <\/b>&#8211; &#8220;Oxonians on the Hoka: Setting the Stage for<br \/>\nChange,&#8221; various guest speakers.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Feb. 13<\/b> &#8211; &#8220;Native Pleasures of the North Mississippi<br \/>\nWoodland,&#8221; Sherra Owen, environmental educator in New<br \/>\nAlbany.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Feb. 20<\/b> &#8211; &#8220;Anticipating Writing Women&#8217;s History: A Tribute<br \/>\nto Anne Firor Scott in the 33rd Porter Fortune Jr.<br \/>\nChancellor&#8217;s Symposium,&#8221; Elizabeth Payne, UM professor of<br \/>\nhistory.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span><b>Feb. 27 <\/b>&#8211; &#8220;Making the American Dream Come True in Oxford:<br \/>\nLOU Home Inc., the Amos Network and Habitat for Humanity,&#8221;<br \/>\nFrederick Laurenzo, president, LOU Home Inc.; Lynn Wilkins,<br \/>\nleadership committee member, Amos Network; Ocie Cook, new<br \/>\nhomeowner; Janice F.
