David Katz<\/p><\/div>\n

OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 David S. Katz, of Tel Aviv University, will discuss the influence of Arnold J. Toynbee, a reporter for the Manchester Guardian in the Turkish War of Independence in a lecture Thursday (Oct. 9) at the University of Misissippi.<\/p>\n

The talk, titled “Saving Lives, Collapsing Civilians,” is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Croft Building, Room 107. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

A professor of history, Katz will talk about reports Toynbee filed during the Turkish War of Independence that were crucial to improving the country’s image in Britain, while at the same time, having the opportunity to save the lives of hundreds of Turkish civilians through his “fearless personal intervention.”<\/p>\n

Toynbee, perhaps the world’s most read and cited historian of the early 20th century, also wrote “A Study History,” which was published in dozens of volumes between 1934 and 1961. The work made him a household name across the English-speaking world, and he wound up on the cover of Time magazine. He is often thought of as the greatest historian of his time.<\/p>\n

The lecture is presented by the university’s departments of history and English, the Croft Institute for International Studies and the University Lecture Series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
