OXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi alumnus and his
\nwife have honored Chancellor Robert Khayat with a gift of
\n$300,000 to the Chancellor’s Trust.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\nFred and Beth Jones of Columbus gave the money to show
\ntheir support of Khayat’s leadership. Established in 1975,
\nthe UM fund is used at the chancellor’s discretion to
\naddress the university’s greatest needs. For example, the
\nmoney may be used to enhance faculty development, provide
\nscholarships or respond to changing demands.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nFred Jones, who graduated from the UM School of Business
\nAdministration in 1958, when Khayat also was a student,
\nsaid that part of his motivation in giving specifically to
\nthe Chancellor’s Trust was his loyalty to Khayat’s vision
\nfor the university.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I think this is the best way money can be spent,” Jones
\nsaid. “I support Chancellor Khayat and I don’t think anyone
\ncould match what he’s done for the campus. I had a
\nwonderful time at Ole Miss and I hope students attending
\nschool there today will enjoy it as much as I did.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe gift is part of the university’s MomentUM campaign, a
\nfour-year initiative to raise $200 million. The campaign,
\nwhich ends in December 2008, already has raised more than
\n$160 million for scholarships, graduate fellowships,
\nfaculty support, a basketball practice facility,
\nresidential colleges and a new law school on the Oxford
\ncampus. Also in the plan is a cancer center at the UM
\nMedical Center in Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Fred Jones is one of our outstanding graduates who has
\ncontinued his interest in Ole Miss with his support,”
\nKhayat said. “We are most grateful for this generous gift.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe couple’s gift comes in large part in the form of an IRA
\nrollover.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is an attractive option for individuals who wish to
\nmake charitable donations, as it eliminates all or part of
\nthe taxes that would otherwise be due on the amount
\nwithdrawn,” said Wendell Weakly, president of the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Foundation. “Fred and Beth Jones
\nare good friends to this institution and their gift will
\nmake a significant difference in the lives of our students
\nand faculty.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJones is president of Columbus Marble Works, which was
\nestablished in 1846. He and his wife have two daughters,
\nPerrin Kibler of Atlanta and Bethea Smith of Columbus. For
