\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi professor is
\nthe inaugural recipient of a regional Institute of
\nTransportation Engineers award for teaching excellence.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nWaheed Uddin, acting chair and professor of civil
\nengineering, was presented the Epps\/Dart Award by the Deep
\nSouth Section of ITE on campus during a recent student
\nchapter meeting. Named after distinguished transportation
\nengineering professors James W. Epps and Olin K. Dart, the
\nhonor recognizes Uddin’s many years of outstanding
\ninstruction and leadership of UM’s ITE student chapter.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Under Dr. Uddin’s mentoring, the Ole Miss student chapter
\nplaced second in the Southern District ITE student
\nchapters, and one of his students won the DSITE
\nUndergraduate Student Paper Award,” said Bob Mabry, a past
\npresident of DSITE and the Southern District of ITE and
\npresenter of the Epps\/Dart Award. “These achievements made
\nthe Ole Miss student chapter the most award-winning in the
\nDeep South Section.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe award was originally to have been presented at the
\nDSITE meeting, but Uddin was out of the country at that
\ntime.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Since Bob was scheduled to be at Ole Miss for a
\npresentation, it was a good opportunity to make the award
\nin front of some of Dr. Uddin’s students,” said Dart, a
\nlife member of ITE and a past president of DSITE.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUddin described the presentation as “a pleasant surprise.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Having Bob Mabry announce and present this award and
\nplaque to me following his lecture to civil engineering
\nfaculty and graduate students was most unexpected,” said
\nUddin, who is also director of the Center for Advanced
\nInfrastructure Technology at Ole Miss. “I am honored to
\nreceive the 2007 Epps\/Dart Award, which recognizes my
\ncontributions in teaching students and mentoring
\ntransportation professionals in Mississippi and Louisiana.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am extremely pleased that Dr. Uddin received this
\nrecognition,” said Alex Cheng, chair and professor of civil
\nengineering who is on sabbatical until January. “He has an
\nengaging style with his students and has mentored many of
\nthem through the ITE chapter’s activities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is a great honor for not only Dr. Uddin, but the
\ncivil engineering department at Ole Miss,” said Kai Fong
\nLee, dean of engineering. “I commend him for the effective
\nmentoring he provides to his students.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides the Ole Miss chapter, DSITE has active student
\nchapters at Mississippi State University (from which Epps
\nretired), Louisiana State University (from which Dart
\nretired), University of Louisiana-Lafayette and Southern
\nUniversity. Mabry is working to establish a sixth student
\nchapter at Jackson State University. All civil engineering
\nfaculty members at universities with active student
\nchapters are eligible for the award.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nITE is an international educational and scientific
\nassociation of transportation professionals who are
\nresponsible for meeting mobility and safety needs. Founded
\nin 1930, ITE boasts 17,774 members in 92 countries,
\nincluding 2,100 in the nine-state Southern District, and
\n282 in the Deep South Section. Levels of participation
\ninclude Life Member, Institute Affiliate, Member, Student
\nMember and Fellow.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
