\nOXFORD, Miss. – The faculty at the University of
\nMississippi is firmly supporting Chancellor Robert Khayat
\nin his efforts to encourage a more equitable method of
\nallocating funds for the state’s eight universities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThis week, UM’s Faculty Senate passed a resolution urging
\nKhayat to continue his efforts to encourage the Board of
\nTrustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning to revise
\nthe funding allocation process.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMississippi’s eight public universities are funded in part
\nby a lump sum appropriation to the IHL board. The board
\nthen allocates funds to each of the institutions. Ole Miss
\nreceives the second-lowest amount per student of the eight
\nuniversities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJohn S. Williamson, chair of UM’s Faculty Senate, said that
\nthe IHL elected to “lock in” funding allocations in
\nresponse to “dwindling and stagnant” state funding from
\n2001 to 2006.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The funding method does not take into account fluctuation
\nin enrollment and operational changes,” Williamson said.
\n“We urge the IHL board to implement an equitable
\nadjustment.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The faculty has complete confidence in Chancellor Khayat
\nto do what is best for this university, including students,
\nfaculty and staff,” Williamson said. “This is just one more
\nexample of his commitment to assure that the University of
\nMississippi has all resources possible to be an outstanding
\npublic academic institution.”
