\nOXFORD, Miss. – Carolyn Ellis Staton, provost and vice
\nchancellor for academic affairs at the University of
\nMississippi since 1999, is stepping down at the end of the
\nyear.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nStaton informed Chancellor Robert Khayat of her desire to
\nretire effective June 30, 2008 and asked to transition out
\nof the position beginning in January.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Accordingly, I have asked Morris Stocks to assume
\nresponsibilities as the interim provost beginning January 1
\nand have asked Dr. Staton to provide a support role for him
\nand for us,” Khayat said. “The entire university community
\nis indebted to Carolyn for her many years of faithful
\nservice to the University both as a member of the law
\nschool faculty and an administrator.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStocks, former dean of the School of Accountancy, served
\nthree years as associate provost. He has served as senior
\nvice chancellor for planning and operations since August
\n2006.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStaton joined the faculty in the School of Law in 1977 and
\nlater served as interim dean of the Law Center. Previously,
\nshe was in private law practice in New York and was an
\nassistant U.S. attorney in the District of New Jersey. In
\n1994, she became interim associate vice chancellor for
\nacademic affairs, and two years later was named associate
\nprovost. Staton was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of
\nFrankfort and the University of Munich.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShe holds a bachelor’s degree from Tulane University, a
\nmaster’s from Columbia University and a juris doctorate
\nfrom the Yale Law School.
