\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi professor of
\nEnglish has published a novel on the life of the late
\nFinnish poet and translator Pentti Saarikoski.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nDoug Robinson, a former resident of Jyvaskyla, Finland,
\nrecently revisited Finland for the Helsinki Book Fair to
\npromote his novel, “Pentinpeijaiset” (“Saarikoski’s
\nSpirits”). The event included a panel discussion of the
\nbook attended by more than 300 people, including two of
\nSaarikoski’s former wives.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe novel is causing quite a controversy in Finland,
\nRobinson said. Part of the opposition points toward
\nRobinson, an American who has written about a person
\nconsidered by some to be among that countrys sacred
\nliterary idols.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Another source of controversy is that this book includes
\nvery personal things about real people,” Robinson said.
\n“There’s a balance of positive and negative things; it’s
\nthe negative things that make it controversial.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSaarikoski married four times and was accused of having
\nextramarital affairs. He was known to have been a heavy
\ndrinker of alcohol, which eventually contributed to his
\ndeath in 1983.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As a way of rebellion against his father, he lived very
\nmuch in the public eye,” Robinson said. “He told the media
\neverything about himself, including any time he cheated on
\nhis wife.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSaarikoski gained fame in his country for translating J.D.
\nSalinger’s “Catcher in the Rye.” At the time, there were no
\ncomparable Finnish words for some of the slang Salinger
\nused in the novel. Saarikoski is credited for creating a
\nnew literary language in Finland by collecting the slang
\nthat teenagers used in local teen hangouts and putting them
\ninto print. His other translations include Homer’s
\n“Odyssey” and James Joyce’s “Ulysses.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRobinson, who was named UM’s director of freshman writing
\nthis year, has received accolades from Patrick Quinn, chair
\nand professor of English.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Seldom in my 35 years of academic work have I met a
\ncolleague with the fine mind of Doug Robinson,” Quinn said.
\n“What is exceptional about Doug is not only his dedication
\nto research, but also the varied nature of his output:
\nLiterary theory, linguistics, literature and composition
\nare all grist for his intellectual curiosity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides “Pentinpeijaiset,” Robinson published three other
\nworks this year. He translated Finnish author Elina
\nHirvonen’s debut novel, “Etta Han Muistaisi Saman” (“When I
\nForgot”) into English. The book’s sales point to its being
\nthe most popular translated debut novel in Finnish history,
\naccording to the publisher, Portobello. It is the story of
\na Finnish girl who has an affair with an American man
\nsuffering from the effects of Sept. 11 and the Iraq War.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRobinson’s scholarly monograph “Estrangement and the
\nSomatics of Literature: Tolstoy, Shklovsky, Brecht” is due
\nto be published by Johns Hopkins University Press in March.
\nHe wrote the book while on a Fulbright trip to Russia.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAlso, Robinson and his wife, Svetlana Ilinskaya, UM
\ninstructor in English, have custom published the academic
\ntextbook Writing as Drama for UMs English 101 course. The
\nbook’s second edition is in production for use in the
\nspring semester, and Robinson and Ilinskaya are in talks
\nwith the publisher, McGraw-Hill, to market it nationally.
