Having served on<br \/>\nthe NFF Board for 14 years, I am humbled that my fellow<br \/>\nmembers have asked me to take on this prestigious role. I<br \/>\nam truly honored to carry on the organization&#8217;s rich<br \/>\ntraditions and critical mission of building the character<br \/>\nof the young men who play our great sport.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>An All-America quarterback at Ole Miss, a 1989 inductee<br \/>\ninto the College Football Hall of Fame, and a Pro Bowl<br \/>\nplayer with the New Orleans Saints, Manning has created a<br \/>\nreputation as leading humanitarian, leveraging his fame to<br \/>\nassist a wide range of causes, including his long-standing<br \/>\nefforts to battle Cystic Fibrosis. He currently serves in<br \/>\npublic relations and consulting capacities for several<br \/>\nlocal, regional and national companies, including Reebok,<br \/>\nGatorade, AstroTurf, Direct TV and CBS Sports.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>No person serves as a better example of what our<br \/>\norganization represents than Archie Manning, and there is<br \/>\nnobody better qualified to be our chairman than him, said<br \/>\nNFF President &#038; CEO Steven J. Hatchell. We are fortunate<br \/>\nthat Archie has accepted this role, and I look forward to<br \/>\nworking closely with him to build on the legacy created by<br \/>\nRon. As Archie assumes his new position, he inherits a post<br \/>\nutilized by Ron to strengthen our organization&#8217;s impact<br \/>\nfrom border to border and coast to coast.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>During Johnson&#8217;s tenure as chairman, the NFF positioned<br \/>\nitself for strong growth in the coming years. Significant<br \/>\ndevelopments included relocating the organization&#8217;s<br \/>\ncorporate headquarters from Morristown, New Jersey to<br \/>\nDallas, Texas; creating a robust corporate partnership<br \/>\nprogram; implementing several new initiatives to strengthen<br \/>\nthe NFF Chapter network; adding several new key partners to<br \/>\nthe Play It Smart Program, including the Chick-fil-A Bowl<br \/>\nand the U.S. Department of Justice; adding several<br \/>\nprominent national leaders to the board of directors,<br \/>\nincluding Jim Delany, Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft, Michael<br \/>\nMoe, Kevin Plank, Mike Slive, Roger Williams and Deborah<br \/>\nYow; and launching the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, which<br \/>\nsignificantly expands the number of scholar-athletes the<br \/>\nNFF recognizes each year.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;Having served on the board of The National Football<br \/>\nFoundation since 1993, Archie&#8217;s leadership has played a<br \/>\nvital role in helping to expand our organization&#8217;s impact<br \/>\nover the past decade,&#8221; said outgoing Chairman Johnson.<br \/>\n&#8220;Nobody has more passion for helping young football players<br \/>\ndevelop on and off the field, and he is a true leader who<br \/>\nwill add significantly to the Foundation&#8217;s legacy of<br \/>\npromoting the good in the game.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Johnson will remain a member of the board, assuming a new<br \/>\nrole as chairman of the executive committee. In addition to<br \/>\nJohnson, past NFF chairmen include Chester J. LaRoche,<br \/>\nVincent DePaul Draddy, William Pearce and Jon F. Hanson<br \/>\n(Emeritus). Manning follows Johnson as the second member of<br \/>\nthe College Football Hall of Fame to serve as chairman.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Founded in 1947 under the leadership of General Douglas<br \/>\nMacArthur, legendary Army coach Earl &#8220;Red&#8221; Blaik and<br \/>\nrenowned journalist Grantland Rice, the NFF serves as a<br \/>\nleading voice in the promotion of amateur football and its<br \/>\nability to develop the qualities of leadership,<br \/>\nsportsmanship, competitive zeal and the drive for academic<br \/>\nachievement in America&#8217;s young people.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>With 121 chapters and 12,000 members nationwide, The<br \/>\nNational Football Foundation &#038; College Hall of Fame, a<br \/>\nnon-profit educational organization, runs programs designed<br \/>\nto use the power of amateur football in developing<br \/>\nscholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in young<br \/>\npeople.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>The NFF presents the MacArthur Trophy, the Draddy Trophy<br \/>\nand releases the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) Standings.<br \/>\nNFF programs include the College Football Hall of Fame in<br \/>\nSouth Bend, Ind., Play It Smart, the NFF Hampshire Honor<br \/>\nSociety, and scholarships of over $1 million for college<br \/>\nand high school scholar-athletes. He was recently<br \/>\nselected Father of the Year by the National Father&#8217;s Day<br \/>\nCouncil. He currently serves in public relations and<br \/>\nconsulting capacities for several local, regional and<br \/>\nnational companies, including Reebok, Gatorade, AstroTurf,<br \/>\nDirect TV and CBS Sports. For 25 years he hosted four<br \/>\nArchie Manning Cystic Fibrosis benefit golf tournaments in<br \/>\nLouisiana and Mississippi and is active in a wide variety<br \/>\nof charitable and civic causes.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Archie was born May 19, 1949, in Drew, Miss. He attended<br \/>\nthe University of Mississippi where he was named an<br \/>\nAll-American Quarterback and was the first Ole Miss player<br \/>\nto have his number (18) retired. The late Chucky Mullins is<br \/>\nthe only other Rebel with his number (38) retired. He was<br \/>\nvoted the State of Mississippi&#8217;s Greatest All-Time Athlete<br \/>\nin 1992, and recently named Mississippi&#8217;s Most Popular<br \/>\nAthlete of the Century. He was elected to the 50-Year<br \/>\nAll-South Team (1940-1990), named one of the Top 25<br \/>\nAthletes of the Century in Louisiana and he and his son<br \/>\nPeyton were named among the 100 All-Time Greatest College<br \/>\nFootball Players. Archie was inducted into the National<br \/>\nFootball Foundation College Hall of Fame and is a member of<br \/>\nother Halls of Fame including Louisiana and Mississippi.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>In 1971, Archie was the second player chosen in the NFL<br \/>\ndraft &#8211; the number one draft choice of the New Orleans<br \/>\nSaints. He set Saints passing records, played in two Pro<br \/>\nBowls and was named the NFL Most Valuable Player in 1978.<br \/>\nHe was the first player in Saints history to be inducted<br \/>\ninto the Louisiana Superdome Wall of Fame. He concluded his<br \/>\n15-year career in 1985. He was also drafted four times by<br \/>\nmajor league baseball.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>While in pro football, he received the Byron &#8220;Whizzer&#8221;<br \/>\nWhite Humanitarian Award, the Bart Starr Humanitarian<br \/>\nAward, the Spirit of Good Sports Award from the National<br \/>\nSportscasters and Sportswriters Association and the U.S.<br \/>\nJaycees named him one of 10 Outstanding Young Americans. In<br \/>\n2005 Archie received the Legends award from the Davey<br \/>\nO&#8217;Brien Foundation and the Aspire award, a tribute to<br \/>\nlife&#8217;s coaches, from the Cal Ripken Foundation.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>His community activities include Louisiana Special<br \/>\nOlympics, the New Orleans Area Boy Scout Council, the<br \/>\nSalvation Army, United Way Speakers Bureau, Allstate Sugar<br \/>\nBowl Committee, New Orleans Sports Foundation, and National<br \/>\nFootball Foundation and College Hall of Fame Board of<br \/>\nDirectors.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Archie and his wife Olivia reside in New Orleans and have<br \/>\nthree sons, Cooper, Peyton and Eli. Cooper is an<br \/>\ninstitutional broker in New Orleans, and father of Archie<br \/>\nand Olivia&#8217;s granddaughter, May and grandsons, Arch and<br \/>\nHeid (pronounced &#8216;hide&#8217;). Peyton is a former All-American<br \/>\nat Tennessee. As quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts he<br \/>\nwas named MVP in the National Football League in 2003 &#038;<br \/>\n2004 and is a seven-time all-Pro selection. Also in 2004 he<br \/>\nbroke Dan Marino&#8217;s record by throwing for 49 touchdowns and<br \/>\nin 2006 won the Walter Payton award as the &#8220;NFL Man of the<br \/>\nYear&#8221;. He recently led the Colts to the Super Bowl<br \/>\nchampionship and was named MVP of the game. Eli set 47<br \/>\nschool records as quarterback of the Ole Miss Football team<br \/>\nand in 2003 received the Maxwell Trophy as the Outstanding<br \/>\nPlayer in College Football. Eli is the quarterback of the<br \/>\nNew York Giants and was the No. 1 selection in the 2004 NFL<br \/>\nDraft.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Archie and Peyton wrote a book entitled &#8220;Manning: A Father,<br \/>\nHis Sons and A Football Legacy&#8221;. He and his boys also<br \/>\noperate the Manning Passing Academy, a summer camp for high<br \/>\nschool quarterbacks and receivers.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Peyton and Eli both claimed National Scholar-Athlete Awards<br \/>\nfrom the National Football Foundation, in 1997 and 2003<br \/>\nrespectively, for their combined academic excellence,<br \/>\nfootball performance, and community leadership in college.<br \/>\nPeyton also claimed the Draddy Trophy as the absolute best<br \/>\nin the nation that year for his combined achievements.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>In honor of the Mannings&#8217; college football accomplishments,<br \/>\nthe Sugar Bowl has created the Manning Award to go to the<br \/>\nnation&#8217;s best college quarterback. Recently the National<br \/>\nFather&#8217;s Day Council named Archie &#8220;Father of the Year,&#8221; and<br \/>\nthe United States Sports Academy honored him with the 2006<br \/>\nDistinguished Service Award.
