\nOXFORD, Miss. – You’re never too young – or too old – to
\nhelp others, especially during the Christmas holiday
\nseason.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nSuch is the mindset of children at the Willie Price Nursery
\nSchool and students of Gamma Beta Phi at the University of
\nMississippi. When the two groups learned about the Black
\nFaculty and Staff Organization’s annual “Books and Bears”
\ndrive, they both decided to contribute new toys to be given
\nto children of UM Physical Plant employees.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nNursery school children conducted a bake sale to raise
\nfunds used to purchase toys. Students in the national honor
\nand service organization buy toys throughout the year as
\npart of their community service.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDozens of toys from the two groups were delivered to the
\nLyceum Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and added to other
\ndonations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Giving and sharing with others is what this season is all
\nabout,” said Carolyn Allen, kindergarten teacher at Willie
\nPrice. “Vicki Stewart (fellow kindergarten teacher) and I
\nbelieve it is important to teach our students to share with
\nothers and are glad to support a project that benefits the
\nuniversity community.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Gamma Beta Phi members contribute to the community in
\nmultiple ways,” said Denis Goulet, biology instructor and
\nco-faculty adviser to the organization. “In this case, the
\nstudents donated toys. We try to support the needs of those
\nwithin the university community first and foremost.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDonald Cole, assistant provost and assistant to the
\nchancellor for multicultural affairs, expressed
\nappreciation to the children and students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My heart is simply overwhelmed,” Cole said. “Their
\ngenerosity, effort and genuineness would even touch the
\nGrinch’s heart. They have put me in the mood for giving,
\nand I can be assured that these are gifts that children
\nwill desire since they were picked by experts in the
\nfield.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis is the 10th year new teddy bears, children’s books and
\ntoys have been collected for children of custodians,
\ngroundskeepers and other service workers. Distribution
\ntakes place Friday (Dec. 14) in the Student Union
\nBallroom.
