\nOXFORD, Miss. – Students in high schools and middle schools
\nstatewide are invited to enter the second annual Trebuchet
\nHurling Competition Feb. 5 at the University of
\nMississippi.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nWhile activities for the students are planned for the
\nentire day, the final hurling contest begins at 5 p.m. in
\nthe Ole Miss Indoor Practice Facility and is free and open
\nto the public. Sponsors are the School of Engineering and
\nthe Mississippi Junior Academy of Science.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The first catapult competition was such a great success,
\nbut this year’s event is being expanded to be even more
\nexciting,” said Maxine Woolsey, engineering education
\noutreach specialist. “The event will be all day instead of
\nonly in the evening. The registration fee is $5 per
\nstudent, which includes a T-shirt and membership in MJAS.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAwards will be presented based on distance, height,
\naccuracy and design. Schools should e-mail a notice of
\nintent to participate and school\/teacher contact
\ninformation to Woolsey at
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn return, the schools will receive an event itinerary,
\nrequirements for the design and construction of the
\ntrebuchet, and information on the tennis ball hurling
\ncompetition. Trebuchet specifications and competition
\ndescriptions can be found on the Mississippi Academy of
\nSciences Web site at
\nhttp:\/\/www.msacad.org\/mjas\/events.html.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMultiple teams of three to five students from each school
\ncan design and construct a trebuchet to hurl tennis balls.
\nHowever, there will be restrictions limiting the number of
\nteams from each school participating in the final evening
\ncompetition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTeams within individual schools are scheduled to compete at
\n10 a.m. During the afternoon, each school will determine
\nwhich two trebuchet teams represent them in the finals.
\nUpon request, arrangements can be made for the visiting
\nstudents to visit, tour and participate in lab
\ndemonstrations in the Ole Miss science, mathematics, and
\nengineering departments and centers.
