\nOXFORD, Miss. – Donald Shores Vaughan, professor emeritus
\nof political science at the University of Mississippi, died
\nThursday in Tucson, Ariz., at age 86. He retired from UM in
\n1988, after some 33 years of service.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nWaller Funeral Home in Oxford is handling the arrangements,
\nwhich are to be announced.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Dr. Vaughan was a good man who cared very deeply about Ole
\nMiss,” said John Winkle, professor of political science who
\nworked with Vaughan for nearly 15 years. “He was known
\nthroughout Mississippi for his work to assist local
\ngovernments to be more successful.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nVaughan joined the UM faculty in 1955 as an assistant
\nprofessor. He chaired the Department of Political Science
\nfrom 1968 to 1982. His other positions included assistant
\ndirector of Public Administration Research and assistant
\ndirector and director of the Bureau of Governmental
\nResearch.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAccording to Winkle, Vaughan was responsible for developing
\nUM’s public administration program, both at the
\nundergraduate and graduate levels. With his research
\nfocused on public administration at the local and state
\nlevels, Vaughan saw many of his former students continue to
\nserve in government, Winkle said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBorn in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Vaughan received his doctorate
\nin American political institutions from Columbia University
\nin 1949. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt
\nUniversity and master’s from the University of Alabama.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA retired U.S. Navy lieutenant, he joined the military as a
\nU.S. Navy Reserve Midshipmen in 1943 while at Columbia
\nUniversity. He attended the Naval Academys postgraduate
\nschool and the Submarine Chaser Training Center in Miami.
\nAssigned to the U.S.S. Portland, Vaughan served as a radio,
\nsignal and communications officer in 1944-46. He also
\nserved in New York and Memphis as a reserve.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nVaughan married Sarah Auten in 1945. They had two children,
\nBeverly and Kenneth.
