\nOXFORD, Miss. – Sculptures by visiting artist Jennifer
\nTorres are on exhibit at the University of Mississippi
\nthrough Jan. 17.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nTorres, a faculty member at the University of Southern
\nMississippi, is showing her work in Gallery 130 of Meek
\nHall. The exhibit is free and open to the public. The
\ngallery is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays except during the
\nholiday break Dec. 21-Jan. 2.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBorn in Queens, N.Y., Torres completed her first four years
\nof studio training as a teenager at the Art Students
\nLeague, followed by undergraduate work at the Cooper Union,
\nboth in New York.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile at Cooper Union, she took a year off to travel alone
\nin India and Nepal, a trip she says was a turning point in
\nher life and a great influence in her later work. After
\ngraduating from Cooper Union, she trained as a fine
\ncabinetmaker in New England, then worked at a lumber mill
\nin Oregon.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTorres earned her master’s of fine arts from the University
\nof Georgia in 1995 and has served as chair of the art
\ndepartments at both USM and Bethany College in Lindsborg,
\nKan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“She has been around and done a lot of different things,”
\nsaid Nancy Wicker, UM art department chair. “She has a
\nvaried background and that’s great for our students.
\nArtists need to be exposed to different perspectives and
\nways of making art.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
