{"id":454,"date":"2008-01-24T10:52:25","date_gmt":"2008-01-24T16:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=454"},"modified":"2014-09-23T09:24:46","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T14:24:46","slug":"students-in-dietetics-lead-program-for-high-school-students-in-batesville","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/students-in-dietetics-lead-program-for-high-school-students-in-batesville\/","title":{"rendered":"Students in Dietetics Lead Program for High School Students in Batesville"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<span> OXFORD, Miss. -\u00ad Students studying dietetics at the<br \/>\nUniversity of Mississippi got hands-on experience and<br \/>\ninfluenced the lives of some high school students in<br \/>\nlate November thanks to a $7,500 grant from the<br \/>\nMississippi chapter of the March of Dimes.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n<span> The &#8220;New Futures&#8221; program, administered at South Panola<br \/>\nHigh School in Batesville, focused on educating<br \/>\nstudents about the dangers of poor nutrition during<br \/>\npregnancy, the risk factors of premature labor and the<br \/>\nimportance of learning how to set goals to continue<br \/>\ntheir education, said Teresa Carithers, chair of the<br \/>\nDepartment of Family and Consumer Science and principal<br \/>\ninvestigator for the grant.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> Dietetics students who received scholarships to gain<br \/>\ntheir Nutrition Data System certification were trained<br \/>\nto use the NDS software for interactive dietary data<br \/>\ncollection and nutrition calculations. The<br \/>\ncalculations provide analyses and educational support<br \/>\nfor the program.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> The NDS database includes more than 150,000 foods and<br \/>\n6,000 different product names that prompt the user to<br \/>\ndescribe food intake in great detail to explain the<br \/>\nbenefits of good nutrition. Ultimately, the information<br \/>\ncan be used for dietary research.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> &#8220;Close to 50 South Panola students participated and<br \/>\nreceived incentives and hopefully new knowledge that<br \/>\nwill help them build better futures,&#8221; Carithers said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> Martha Lynn Johnson, who oversees grant programs at the<br \/>\nhigh school, said the New Futures program is extremely<br \/>\nsuccessful in reaching high school students, many of<br \/>\nwhom have limited knowledge about proper nutrition.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> &#8220;It really raises their conscience level about what<br \/>\nthey are eating for the health of their baby and for<br \/>\nthemselves,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They seem to listen better when<br \/>\nthey get the information from speakers outside the<br \/>\nschool district, and they really do learn.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> Carithers said there are a number of advantages to<br \/>\nprograms like this that bring different educational<br \/>\ninstitutions together to address a problem.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> &#8220;Collaborative community-based initiatives provide<br \/>\nneeded services to local organizations, give our<br \/>\nstudents valuable hands-on experience and build<br \/>\npotential relationships,&#8221; she said.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span> UM graduate student Lacy Myrick of Kosciusko served as<br \/>\nthe project coordinator, and Julian Gillian assisted<br \/>\nwith the academic goal-setting presentation.
