\n OXFORD, Miss. -\u00ad Students studying dietetics at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi got hands-on experience and
\ninfluenced the lives of some high school students in
\nlate November thanks to a $7,500 grant from the
\nMississippi chapter of the March of Dimes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n The “New Futures” program, administered at South Panola
\nHigh School in Batesville, focused on educating
\nstudents about the dangers of poor nutrition during
\npregnancy, the risk factors of premature labor and the
\nimportance of learning how to set goals to continue
\ntheir education, said Teresa Carithers, chair of the
\nDepartment of Family and Consumer Science and principal
\ninvestigator for the grant.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Dietetics students who received scholarships to gain
\ntheir Nutrition Data System certification were trained
\nto use the NDS software for interactive dietary data
\ncollection and nutrition calculations. The
\ncalculations provide analyses and educational support
\nfor the program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n The NDS database includes more than 150,000 foods and
\n6,000 different product names that prompt the user to
\ndescribe food intake in great detail to explain the
\nbenefits of good nutrition. Ultimately, the information
\ncan be used for dietary research.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Close to 50 South Panola students participated and
\nreceived incentives and hopefully new knowledge that
\nwill help them build better futures,” Carithers said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Martha Lynn Johnson, who oversees grant programs at the
\nhigh school, said the New Futures program is extremely
\nsuccessful in reaching high school students, many of
\nwhom have limited knowledge about proper nutrition.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “It really raises their conscience level about what
\nthey are eating for the health of their baby and for
\nthemselves,” she said. “They seem to listen better when
\nthey get the information from speakers outside the
\nschool district, and they really do learn.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Carithers said there are a number of advantages to
\nprograms like this that bring different educational
\ninstitutions together to address a problem.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Collaborative community-based initiatives provide
\nneeded services to local organizations, give our
\nstudents valuable hands-on experience and build
\npotential relationships,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n UM graduate student Lacy Myrick of Kosciusko served as
\nthe project coordinator, and Julian Gillian assisted
\nwith the academic goal-setting presentation. NDS
\nscholarship participants from the department included
\nMyrick, Ashley Gruber of Birmingham, Ala., Sonya Hopson
\nof Oxford, Wanda McKean of Oxford, Kin Pang of Senai,
\nMalaysia, Shira Scott of Clarksdale and Katherine
\nSullivan of Diamondhead.
