\n OXFORD, Miss. – Karen Moore connects people with
\nopportunities, said Bruce Moore, who is honoring
\nhis wife by making certain more opportunities are
\navailable for young people.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n Bruce Moore of Nashville has created the Karen Bell
\nMoore Scholarship at the University of Mississippi
\nunder the guidance of the Ole Miss Women’s Council
\nwith a $100,000 gift.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Karen is always reaching out and doing things for
\nother people,” said Bruce Moore, president of the
\nHospital Corporation of America Outpatient Services
\nGroup. “When a person continually puts others first
\nwithout any expectation of anything in return,
\nthere is a definite ripple effect. Karen makes life
\nbetter for many; she cares about people on a very
\nindividual basis.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A framed certificate about the scholarship was
\nwrapped as a surprise birthday gift for the
\nhonoree.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Bruce won’t ever be able to give me a gift that
\nwill be greater than this scholarship,” Karen Moore
\nsaid. “I was so excited and so humbled. Bruce and I
\nfeel passionate about the university and about the
\nwork of Chancellor Robert Khayat. This scholarship
\nwill support both.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Scholarship recipients are to be selected from
\nmiddle Tennessee residents who plan to attend UM.
\nKaren Moore serves on the Ole Miss Women’s Council,
\nwhich provides mentoring and leadership training to
\nhelp scholarship recipients succeed. Some council
\nscholars recently traveled to Nashville for a
\nweekend of music industry-related experiences, and
\nMoore helped plan the activities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “I love the women on this council and the purpose
\nof their work,” said Karen Moore. “It is so
\ninspiring to see the way they encourage students.
\nThis is what I’m all about: I love to mentor and to
\nsee young people thrive.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Khayat said he applauds the Moores for their
\ncommitment to the university and its students.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Karen and Bruce Moore are extraordinary members of
\nthe Ole Miss family,” Khayat said. “We are grateful
\nfor their contributions to the university, which
\ninclude their service in several areas and this
\ntremendous new scholarship honoring Karen. I have
\nenjoyed meaningful conversations with them about
\nstrengthening our beloved university, and their
\nthoughtful gift is an example of their vision and
\ndevotion.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Jan Farrington of Jackson, who chairs the Women’s
\nCouncil, said the new scholarship is a reflection
\non the couple’s belief in making opportunities
\navailable to others.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “It has been such a pleasure to work with Karen
\nMoore on the Ole Miss Women’s Council,” Farrington
\nsaid. “She and Bruce epitomize our young,
\nenergetic, successful alumni who are making it a
\npriority to give back to Ole Miss. They have
\ncertainly set a wonderful example in giving – not
\nonly of their resources but also of their time and
\ntalent. The recent OMWC scholarship given by Bruce
\nin honor of Karen is just one of the ways that they
\nare providing important opportunities for our
\nstudents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n The Moores, who have supported an array of UM
\nschools and programs with gifts through the years,
\nalso serve as the Nashville co-chairs of the
\nuniversity’s Momentum campaign. The initiative has
\nas its goal attracting $200 million in private
\nsupport for academics and athletics, and more than
\n$160 million already has been given.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “On one occasion, I told Chancellor Khayat I
\nthought there was a huge population in middle
\nTennessee that would be willing to lend support,”
\nKaren Moore said. “I was happy when he later asked
\nBruce and me to work on the campaign. I’ve learned
\nthat Ole Miss is all about family. When you
\ngraduate, you become a part of a network. There is
\nan immediate bond between Ole Miss graduates of all
\nages; we love to help each other and the
\nuniversity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Bruce Moore, who is a UM Foundation board member,
\nagrees. “You never forget where you came from. Ole
\nMiss embodies a sense of loyalty and a sense of
\ncommunity.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Karen Moore also devotes her time to strengthening
\nher Nashville community through numerous
\norganizations, including the Meals on Wheels
\nprogram of the Martha O’Bryan Center and the Cystic
\nFibrosis Foundation. She is co-chairing the 2008
\ngala to attract funds for the Frist Visual Arts
\nCenter, which provides high-quality art
\nexhibitions, educational programs and community
\noutreach activities. The Moores are active in the
\nFirst Presbyterian Church of Nashville, and she
\nteaches a weekly Bible study for high school
\ngirls.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Bruce Moore, whose hometown is Laurel, and Karen
\nBell Moore, a native of Nashville, knew each other
\nthroughout their college years and started dating
\nduring their senior year. Another reason behind the
\nscholarship goes back to their families: Bruce’s
\nsister and Karen’s twin sister and four brothers
\nall earned UM degrees, and now the couple’s oldest
\nson is attending UM.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As anyone can tell, UM is a family tradition,” Bruce Moore
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n The Moores are the parents of Tyler, 20, Margaret
\nAnne, 17, and Mitchell, 14.
