\nOXFORD, Miss. – As more and more countries venture into
\nouter space, the study and development of space law is
\nexpanding. A University of Mississippi professor is playing
\nan important role in that process as an internationally
\nrecognized expert on space law and as a newly-appointed
\nmember of the International Institute of Space Law’s board
\nof directors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nResearch professor Joanne Gabrynowicz said one of the major
\nissues in the realm of space law is the growing interest in
\nwriting national space laws in nationals that have recently
\nentered outer space. For example, Nigeria is defining the
\ntreaty regime for space exploration activities on the moon
\nand Mars.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs a member of the board, Gabrynowicz will work with other
\nIISL members to guide the direction of the organization and
\nits role in the development of space law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is an honor that I will pursue to the best of my
\nability. National and international efforts in developing
\nspace law are increasing around the world,” she said. “Many
\nnew nations are becoming spacefarers. It is an exciting
\ntime to assume this position.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe IISL appointment is just one of many roles filled by
\nGabrynowicz, who is a frequent guest at United Nations
\nconferences and other international space law groups. Just
\nthis year, the professor has traveled to Beijing, China, to
\nspeak at the International Conference on Air Transport and
\nSpace Activities and was asked by the United Nations to
\nparticipate in a December conference on space law in
\nVienna, Austria.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe IISL, founded in 1960, has individual and institutional
\nelected members from more than 40 countries. The
\norganization is a component of the International
\nAstronautical Federation, and its objectives include
\ncooperation with appropriate international organizations
\nand national institutions in the field of space law and
\nfostering the development of space law and studies of legal
\nand social science aspects of the exploration and use of
\nouter space.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nGabrynowicz has taught space law and policy since 1987 and
\nremote sensing law and policy since 1990. She joined the
\nfaculty of the UM School of Law in 2001 as the first
\ndirector of the National Remote Sensing and Space Law
\nCenter, a position she continues to hold.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe center was established to serve as a reliable source
\nfor creating and distributing information and materials on
\nremote sensing, space and aviation issues.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
