\nOXFORD, Miss. – University of Mississippi students can gain
\npractical experience in the nation’s capital through the
\nWashington Internship Experience program developed by the
\nLott Leadership Institute, Department of Political Science
\nand Division of Outreach.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nThe WIE integrates course work and internships for 20
\nstudents during fall, spring and summer terms.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We believe that this unique opportunity to study and work
\nin our nation’s capital will be a valuable experience for
\nstudents,” said William R. Gottshall, executive director of
\nthe Lott Leadership Institute. “One of our goals at the
\ninstitute is to prepare our students to assume positions of
\nleadership. Serving in Washington, D.C., will broaden our
\nstudents’ perception of our nation and the world.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe political science department has offered informal
\ninternships in the past, but the WIE adds an
\ninterdisciplinary approach that includes history, criminal
\njustice and other fields, said Richard Forgette, professor
\nand chair of political science. It also takes the
\ninternship experience to the next level.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s a way to get firsthand knowledge and a feel for how
\nD.C. works,” Forgette said. “This can be a life-changing
\nand career-changing experience. Then when the participants
\ncome back to school, they share that experience in class
\nwith other students, and that’s beneficial to everyone.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMatt Minyard, a junior from Vicksburg majoring in political
\nscience, agreed.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I applied because I really want to understand how
\ngovernment works,” Minyard said. “It has such enormous
\npower to affect lives. I’m looking forward to being in the
\nmiddle of it all.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents can apply the same university, state and federal
\naid available to them on campus to their terms in
\nWashington, making the experience accessible to more
\nstudents from a variety of backgrounds.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Before now, many students didn’t have the time,
\nopportunity or financial ability to participate in this
\nkind of internship,” Forgette said. “But with the WIE,
\nwe’ve made it so that every student has the chance to go to
\nWashington and get this experience.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAs part of the program, the students live together and
\nattend classes while working 32 hours per week as interns
\nin government, the media or a national institution.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe cornerstone of the program is a mandatory Washington
\nPolicy Process seminar, which meets once a week to hear
\nguest speakers from various areas of leadership. Using the
\nvast resources available in the area, students plan and
\nexecute a research project that culminates in a term paper
\nincorporating knowledge achieved through the entirety of
\nthe program. Students also take an additional six-to-nine
\nhours of academic credit.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWIE is open to junior, senior and graduate students.
\nSecond-year sophomores also may apply at their department
\nchair’s discretion. The program is open to all majors.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWilliam Gillis, a senior business major from Columbus,
\nplans to intern in Washington during the spring semester.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Washington Internship Experience will help me
\nunderstand how business and politics work together in
\ndeveloping and implementing public policy,” Gillis said.
\n“What happens in Washington affects everyone. I want to be
\nknowledgeable about the process.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nParticipants pay regular on-campus tuition and fees, plus
\nthe cost of housing, transportation, books and supplies,
\nand food. Applications to WIE for summer 2008 must be
\nsubmitted on or before Feb. 28.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
