\nOXFORD, Miss. – Some of the best shows in live
\nentertainment are scheduled for spring 2008 at the
\nUniversity of Mississippis Gertrude C. Ford Center for the
\nPerforming Arts. They include magic, opera, ballet and
\nBroadway musicals plus a frog and a toad.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nOf course, the Ford Center is not bringing a real frog and
\ntoad to its stage, but Oxford resident Allyson Best said
\nher two little girls are “definitely looking forward to
\nhopping and singing along” during the Broadway musical “A
\nYear with Frog and Toad.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile 5-year-old Aubrey and 2-year-old Lauren will have to
\nwait until April 12 to meet Arnold Lobel’s beloved
\ncharacters, Best said her “bundles of boundless energy”
\nwill be OK, “especially since they’ll get a chance to see a
\nlittle magic in February.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBest is referring to female illusionist Lyn Dillies, whose
\nperformance is scheduled Feb. 10.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Ole Miss really aims to bring outstanding performances to
\nour hometown, which is just one of the reasons I love this
\nuniversity so much,” Best said. “‘Frog and Toad’ plays all
\nover the world and it’s so amazing that it’s coming here.
\nMy husband Brad and I won’t have to drive miles and hours
\nto take our girls to see this musical.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe show is part of the Ford Center’s new Family Friendly
\nSeries, which is sure to be “a favorite for years to come,”
\nsaid Norm Easterbrook, Ford Center director.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Many of our new programs are responses to requests by
\nfolks in the community – especially in the area of
\nfamily-friendly programs,” he said. “We want to provide
\nsome affordable family experiences for young people to be
\nintroduced to the Ford Center and to make the Ford Center
\nevents more familiar and accessible to audiences of all
\nages.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn this effort, Easterbrook also has added the 108 Ford
\nCenter series to this season’s lineup.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“108 Ford Center is quite a different endeavor,”
\nEasterbrook said. “Here again, this is an effort to
\nintroduce programs to a younger audience, in this case 18-
\nto 24-year-olds.” The 108 Ford Center performances will be
\n“coupled with opportunities to meet the performers before
\nor after the show along with several other activities that
\nwe hope will build a following from within this age group,”
\nEasterbrook said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe series includes the musical production “DRUM!” February
\n15 and “The Mystical Arts of Tibet” May 1.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I think ‘The Mystical Arts of Tibet’ will attract a huge
\nstudent following,” Easterbrook said. “Endorsed by the
\nDalai Lama as a means of promoting world peace and healing,
\nthese famed monks will construct a sand mandala painting in
\nconnection with their appearance.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDuring the month before the monks’ visit, University Museum
\nplans to host a photographic exhibition of their travels. A
\nlecture on the sand mandala, a Tibetan Buddhist tradition
\nsymbolizing the transitory nature of things, is slated as
\nwell, Easterbrook said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA Jan. 29 performance by the Time for Three musicians is
\nanother show that Easterbrook expects will attract
\nstudents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Time for Three is a young, dynamic trio of classically
\ntrained string musicians with a style that transcends
\nperformance genres,” Easterbrook said. “In concert, a
\ngypsy-tinged piece may follow a bluegrass standard. This
\ngroup continues to win over widely diverse audiences across
\nAmerica and have been enthusiastically received by schools
\nand communities.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“With magic, opera, Shakespeare and a frog and toad added
\nto the mix, plus the 108 Ford and Ford Family Friendly
\nseries, the upcoming spring season is refreshing, but also
\nenchanting and, at times, downright amazing,” he added.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe season kicks off at 8 p.m. Jan. 27 with Quink, an
\nacclaimed vocal group that ranks among the top a cappella
\nensembles of the world. The schedule of 8 p.m performances
\nalso includes Time for Three Jan. 29; “Ring of Fire,” the
\ntale of Johnny Cash told through songs and stories, Feb. 2;
\n“DRUM!,” a musical production of Nova Scotia, Feb. 15; and
\n“Evita,” the true story of Argentina’s infamous Eva Peron,
\nFeb. 18. “The Magic of Lyn – America’s Premier Female
\nIllusionist,” for children of all ages, is slated for 2
\np.m. Feb. 10.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMid-season performances are “Romeo and Juliet” by the St.
\nPetersburg Ballet on March 4, the Empire Brass on March 28
\nand the Smothers Brothers on March 29. All March
\nperformances are at 8 p.m.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A Year with Frog and Toad” takes the stage at 3 p.m. on
\nApril 12. The season concludes with “The Mystical Arts of
\nTibet” on May 1.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
