\nOXFORD, Miss. – The new year will mark new beginnings for
\nthe communicative disorders department at the University of
\nMississippi as a national search begins to find a chair for
\nthe newly named department.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nFormerly the Department of Communicative Disorders, the
\nDepartment of Communication Sciences and Disorders received
\nits new name in fall 2007 after approval from the Board of
\nTrustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning. It is
\npart of the School of Applied Sciences.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInterim chair Lennette Ivy, who took over for former chair
\nCarolyn Higdon earlier this year, said the new name
\nreflects the broad science base of the professions of
\nspeech-language pathology and audiology.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our students acquire knowledge in the diagnosis and
\nremediation of various communication disorders, and this
\nknowledge is grounded in scientific method and in
\nevidence-based, empirical research,” Ivy said. “In
\naddition, the new name better reflects the mission of the
\ndepartment’s commitment to excellence in academic study,
\nclinical training, creative research, service learning and
\ncommunity outreach.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLinda Chitwood, dean of applied sciences, said the new name
\nis the prevailing standard for academic departments
\naccredited by the American Speech and Hearing Association.
\nShe added the school hopes to hire a permanent chair for
\nthe department by July 1.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are conducting a national search to find the best
\nperson to help this department continue the wonderful
\nprogress it has made over the last few years,” Chitwood
\nsaid. “We need a person who is experienced in academia as a
\ndepartment chair or program director, who has an
\nestablished record of scholarship and grants, has the
\nability to mentor our young and highly talented tenure
\ntrack faculty, and can help the department develop ties
\nwith the professional and university communities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nEssentially, the goal is to continue the department’s
\nprogress, which includes a record number of graduate
\nstudents, new grants and continued operation of the Speech
\nand Hearing Clinic on campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIvy said the primary goal for the entire department is to
\nmake a difference in the region and the state.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“There is such a great need to improve the reading and
\nwriting skills of our school-aged children,” she said.
\n“With literacy being the foundation of all education, the
\ngraduate students trained in communication sciences and
\ndisorders have a lot to offer in establishing that
\nfoundation. Our students receive extensive knowledge and
\ntraining in language and phonological development, which
\nmakes them valuable resources to public school teachers in
\nthe area of literacy development.”
